All I can say is that the benefits and costs of the system are commensurate with one another. If you're saving a lot of fuel, it means the system is "active" a lot which means all those costs (wear/tear, etc.) are higher as well.
Perhaps the reason I don't see much of a benefit is I have the 2.0L which idles @ 4 liters per hour (a little over a gallon an hour) and I don't spend that much time idle in my trips, probably not even half an hour per tank. 2L savings on a 60L fillup to me just isn't that much.
If you have the 40i or 50i where your idle consumption is much higher, 6/8L per hour AND you have more city driving and long lights then yeah I could totally understand using the system.

Yes, I agree with you. The tradeoff is most sensible on cars that consume lots of fuel.
