It's a common problem on my VW Tiguan. The symptoms are a bit of a skip when accelerating. Not quite a misfire, but a hesitation type skip. The solution is to blast the manifold with Walnut shells.
I don't think I have ever heard of BMW's having this issue. At least none of the ones I owned.
