G30 M550 or M3
This question has been asked in the M3/4 thread, but given the audience got a very resounding M3 answer. So here goes it, I had an F80 '15, got t-boned and it's totaled. So now I'm deciding between the m550 or replacing with an m3. Time isn't an issue as I have a truck to drive, (may delivery vs august/sept). Given the m550 isn't out, reviews are slim, but they are positive, (for a 5 series). I am intrigued by the tech in the 550, but is it going to be a boat. The all wheel drive is great, especially given that the M3 was so sideways happy. Ultimately, am I going to miss it, and has anyone else had a similar conundrum?
I never tracked my old m3, probably wouldn't this one. Price wise, 6-7k difference in favor of the m3. Depreciation I would expect the m3 to hold better, as it did get a nice payday from the insurance. But with the update to the 3 happening in a couple years. Does that hurt it? |

2 very different cars
Remember the M550i is not a M Car but a M Performance car, so its luxury with some clout instead of pure motorsport. M3 will feel more nimble, but have less space M550i will feel like a much larger car to maneuver around

Both are going to be amazing!! M3 is more Race tuned and the G30 M550i xDrive more Street tuned.
The F80 is a complete M car and has the decades of race heritage behind it plus instant respect from those that notice what it is. The new Competition Package is very nice. The strong points on the G30 include the latest Tech, xDrive and more room. So much to say about both of these cars. I like the 4 door sports car theme that BMW does so well! Don't forget the new M5 will now have a version of xDrive!!!

I've been told that before, the dealer which is a friend of mine used that line. But I would be getting the ZCP and updated idrive. So a little different

My old F10 550i was really nice, the new one should be a mile better, I had the LCI M3 and sold it , bought a 535D M Sport 313BHP, a real nice car.
Go 550i.

I would personally go for 5 series, but that's because I like the size and practicality. As much as I'd love to own M3, it's totally not practical for my daily use. Same as you, I'm not tracking my car, so even my 535 doesn't get used anywhere to it's full potential, I would imagine it'd be the same or worse with M3.
You on the other hand already have large vehicle (truck) and already know that you love M3. I think chances are high you'd be missing it too much. Impossible to predict, just guessing here. |

I would hold out for the M550. I was all over the place with the next vehicle after my lease is up, but I have settled on the M550 as my next choice, my mistake was driving the 550 but getting the 535 anyway due to a crazy deal....won't happen again!

Do you have kids? Then go with the 5er.
If you value sharp turn-in/sporty driving, then the 550 just won't compare to the M3. As it shouldn't. I have a '16 550 M-Sport and while powerful and comfortable, it def doesn't carve corners very well. Your intended use/desires should tell you which car is right for you. |

Apple vs Orange. Only thing they have in common is 4 doors and BMW as the brand.

In the exact same boat (minus the t-bone) after my '15 M3 lease ends. Leaning towards the M550 for the added interior room, more luxury feel, and simply a change. I love my M3 but think I'm ready to mix it up. Biggest concern is lack of 6MT with the M550....im still not sure I can go auto. Just doesn't seem like it would be that fun.

They are amazing, automatic transmissions in these cars, but going up in size to a significantly different type of car then loosing manual on the top of it might just be too much to keep you happy. Stating the obvious here, sorry, but that's a massive change you're considering, good luck. |

Go for the BMW Alpina B5 xDrive instead of the M550i xDrive.

Luxurious and fast, yes. But fun? Nope. Especially if you're used to manual trans. The M550 will have a torque-converter. |
