Bmw 545e
Hello
I am in the market for a premium car, and is starting to get in love with the 2021 BMW 5 Series. More precise the 545e. Because of new taxes the model can be bought with a very big discount in our country. About 40.000 $ cheaper than last year because it’s a hybrid. So pretty wild. It’s actually cheaper than the 530i! I have heard and read that the inline 6 in the Bmw is legendary. That is of course a factor. The important things for me is the exterior, interior, performance and quality. Do you think the 545e is the way to go? Do you think I should worry about the reliability because it’s the PHEV Technology? Do you have any experiences with the 545e or the inline 6 sitting in it? Thank you for helping. |

I come from an f30 ActiveHybrid 3 which was an excellent car (n55 engine with hybrid drivetrain, not plugin though), and would have gone for 545e clearly if it existed!
The 530e wasn't an exciting car for me, so went for m550i, but to be fair if it's a fun car to drive it's a gas guzzler in town (highway is ok however), and i do miss the inline 6 i had in the ah3, so i think the 545e would have been exactly what i wanted.

The n63 has deep power clearly but without the excitement, i'm not really keen on bringing it beyond 4500rpm... it's another kind altogether, sheer efficiency.

I don't see reliability as an issue. As for interior, it depends upon how you acquire it. The Dakota/Vernasca is, to me, a cheap leather and I would prefer the Sensatec to it. But I went to a 5 series (I like a smaller car) in part because I wanted the Nappa leather. If you get the luxury seating package and the leather dash (if it is available), the interior will be plush. If we could get the 545e in the US, I would trade for it right away. My advice: run and buy it before they change the tax rules!!!! |

The car will cost me around 112.000.$. And that is for the car with the m sport package and some extras Including laserlight. And after a 7000$ discount from the dealer. It is still a big price tag. But last year before the tax benefits the same car would be around 160.000.$. So I guess you are pretty lucky in the US regarding prices. |

The X5 45e is a hot seller in the US. I had the predecessor (X5 40e) with the 4 cylinder and it was wonderful so I can only assume the 45e powertrain is magnificent. I have an X3 M40i and the B58 alone is great. Having the boost from the electric motor would be excellent.
I wish the US got these as I really don't want the liability of the hot-V 8-cylinder out of warranty!

545e owner
Just wanted to give my experience in owning a 545e from may this year.
My previous car was a G30 525d and I changed also because of the interesting tax regulations in Belgium. For me, it's the best car you can have. I was looking for a family car that was also a sportscar and tax-friendly. Well, it's all in one! Practical with the family and very motivated car when I'm alone in the car. I have a sporty driving style and the consumption is 7-8l/100km. So my advice is, go for it!! |

I have my 540i with that same inline 6 engine. The only thing missing, was the MPPSK which I recommend undoubtedly. Not sure if it's available for 545e (probably not).
I've upgraded it with MPPSK; it's a thrill to drive. It has the BMW feel to it. V8s in m550is are purely raw power but inline 6 bimmer it's always filled with thrill and excitement. You sense it when you're pulling away. The experience is still there with I6. |

I have already ordered one. The only problem is that the freaking delivery time is so long. So I don´t know when the car will be in my garage.
And some of the options I have chosen, can´t be delivered such as Harman Kardon, M-sport brakes and wireless charging. I actually was so irritated because of the missing options I cancelled and ordered an I4M50. But I went back to the 545e. The Inline 6 will most probably be my last before going all electric. My build is like this; BMW 545e Bernina grey M-sport Adaptive LED lights Sport seats (sensatec) Power tailgate Extended shadowline Shadowline lights Parking assistant plus Lumbar support Head up display Comfort access 4 zone climate control Heated steering wheel Steptronic transmission M spoiler 19" jet black alloys Open-pored fine wood trim Privacy glass Active cruise control with stop and Go function |

Electrical consumption accuracy: 'My BMW' app 545e
Hi folks,
Just got a rather massive domestic electricity bill (€900 for two months). It's both my first electricity bill since getting my 545e and an outlier in terms of previous bills -it's twice as high. BMW's 'My BMW' app is the one I use with the car and it's telling me the car imported 441Kw during Nov & Dec combined (got car in late Nav). At €0.35/Kw this claims the car contributed €155 to the bill. I wonder has anyone any information as to the reliability of the app in respect of electrical consumption? I will put a meter on the plug (using Mode 2 /3pin) and double check but would be interesting to know if anyone else has a similar experience. I traded my M5 for this… if the cost spike is solely down to the car, the M5 would be cheaper to run! 🙈🤣

I have two ways to see charge times - the BMW app and the outdoor charge unit (which should be more accurate, as it logs all input, inc pre condition, not just charge.
BMW app - 208KWH for DEC. Unit App - 214 KWH - as the car uses power for 30 mins per pre condition, that works out correctly IMO. Well over 70% of my mileage in now electric, and that will increase a fair bit (looking for circa 85 / 90% ) as the engine is now technically 'run in' |

I have a 530e M Sport and love it to death. Almost every day I don't spend any gas, because I find a (generally) free charger everywhere I go.
In terms of sportiness it's no M car but the torque is excellent when you have eBoost. My only complaint is that I wish it was a 6 cylinder and had bigger LCI battery. From that perspective the 545e sounds like the perfect car. |

I think it’s dependent on your needs. The 540e has a total range of roughly 340 miles (20ish on pure battery). If you’re doing city driving, great. But for longer commutes or road trips, that’s a lot of refueling stops. Plus the mpg is so unfortunately not too dissimilar from the i.

The I6 is so smooth, as well. Perfect harmonic balance. Mates perfectly with the ZF 8-speed. I've been thinking of getting the MPPSK, not so much for the tune, but the exhaust. Despite its simplicity, it really is one of the best sounding options for the B58. BMW did a nice job. |

If one wants a driver's car, four- and six-cylinder engines have many advantages where handling and weight are concerned. I find the inline 6 to be the best compromise in that regard. And in other areas the I6 is simply superior; the harmonic balance and smoothness are unmatched. I had no interest in the 545e, however, as I don't want the battery weight, nor the complexity of what is more or less a dead-weight system implemented to satisfy political aims of regulators. |

While I understand the point of view "I dont want the extra weight / dead weight system' I would say this - try driving one (except it's now a 550e or something)
You are simply never aware of said 'extra weight' and it most certainly is not dead - even when no pure electric miles available, the system remains active, adding it's 100+ horses as and when you ask for it. It's a choice, and for me, I am perfectly happy with mine. A mere 806 545e made it to the UK, so far from a common sight. I am sincerely hoping BMW significantly alter its design aspects for the next model / revision, as this will be mine for another 3 or so years, and the new designs simply do not inspire me whatsoever unfortunately. |
