So are you saying people can't brag about fuel economy? or... apparently.. fiscal responsibility... or that being green isn't " cool" ? or " fun"?

I guess it's time to go back to high school... because that's when things were " fun".
There's nothing wrong with good fuel economy, but a company that bills itself as the ultimate driving machine with sport inspired cars needs to have priorities. I'm sure they're offering these engines to meet regulatory guidelines to some degree. And it's technically interesting to see more power being made from smaller engines, but they're losing a lot of what makes the engine attractive to drivers. I don't like feeling a rough idle vibrating through my steering wheel or an engine that makes a tin-like "roar" when I stomp the gas. My wife's Q5 has Audi's T2.0 4 cylinder. It makes plenty of power, but there's no mistaking the lack of refinement in the delivery when you press the gas.

No thanks - I'll stick to 6 or 8 cylinders, or maybe a buttery all electric if I need to go green. But no high revving output leaf blowers for me!

well the article did say from 3 cylinders to 6 (or 8).... so no cause for concern... Some people will go for economy... others for smoky burnouts.

Amazing how people get so up in arms when the company is just tyring to INCREASE their appeal by making their product spread more versatile, or more appealing to a broader range of buyers. No one said they are ONLY going to make 3 cylinder motors.. How are their priorities " lost" ? I don't see a single word about them NOT continuing to bill themselves as, and make " ultimate driving machine with sport inspired cars "

The moment BMW suggest mention Sport and Economy (hey guess what - the terms are not mutually exclusive!) people just go into conniptions

DON"T TAKE AWAY MY FAVORITE !!
I WON'T BUY ANY MORE IF THEY DO "X" .
WAAAAH!!!
Etc etc... ... LOL.. Simma down ..

The F'10 never did anything to get my corpuscle's jumping though. I felt it's gotten too big, too bloated and has strayed from a true drivers reward of a car.

I know comparo's are for selling magazines, but I agree with many of the recent ones that conclude that in this class of automobile, the competition has not just closed the gap to BMW in key driving attributes, but has outright surpassed them.

Here's hoping they get some mojo back with the G generation
I think BMW noted who was buying in this segment and what they value. The sales figures don't lie - it's the best selling 5 to date with more than a million sold in the first few years. The typical mid-sized luxury sedan buyer wants more creature comforts and less seat of your pants. Given that they 3 continues to grow in size and now there's even a 2, I think we can think of the 5 as a smaller more agile 7... But not like the 5s, for better or worse, of yesteryear. I personally love it - plenty or sport for me, but with a family, I'm over my days of cramped rides with suspensions that knocked teeth out... at least in my DD!

Nope

Quote:
"The max. power output of the new 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo will be 50kW/cylinder (500cc). This sums up to approx. 200 HP for the engine max. The 3-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine with the BMW i8 will produce slightly more power (231hp). As it is combined with an electric engine we will have extra boost at low end torque and therefore can use a slightly bigger turbo charger,” our source over at BMW said.

Render looks just what would be expected - same body style but with headlights joining the grille - an unfortunate design direction. The designs are quite predictable now so much so that BMW might as well stop using camouflage altogether. Same goes for the upcoming 7 series. Interior might have the iPad style navigation screen.

That frontal lobotomy look couldn't disappear fast enough! Wife drives a GT and the hood line is awful.

That sounds retarded.
He meant, you will feel better if your car looks brand new, but if there is a new model, your car will look old, even if its only 1 or 2 years old.

Nobody said they would have the same wheelbase...just that the chassis would share components. It's fairly easy to use different bits in the middle, while keeping the ends the same. For example, you could make a CFRP center tub, but attach it to the same front and end pieces, with the tub being different.

You know I was just thinking, assuming they eventually replace the Rolls Royce Ghost (which I am sure they will) and assuming they go about its replacement in the same way they did the first one (basing it off of the 7er) then the 3er will be on the same basic platform as a Rolls Royce.

Something about that just seems wrong.

I can't imagine a 3 cylinder with less balls on a 5'er

Take this for what it's worth but I've seen on other sites that the 550 will be moving away from a V8. Supposedly BMW confirmed this, I'm trying to find the supporting documentation.
