It’s a real shame that you couldn’t find a reputable dealer in Florida. I bought my last 2 out of state but only because of supply issues. I have family in Florida so ty for heads up

I took two long rides and came back stiff from both. Maybe it’s because the 8 series is closer to the ground than the 5 series. When I did my evaluation I could not justify the extra money for a car that’s not faster then my M550. Admittedly it is a very sexy car but comfort and cash outweighed that for me.

37k for a 3 year old 540? Seems super low IMO. They'll sell that thing for mid to high $40k's depending on miles and options

Of all people, you know the car sales business. Dealer needs to make money on both ends. I think high 40's is a stretch. Low to mid 40's. I can't see the dealer going into the 40's on a 540 trade, no matter how low the miles.

The car does have low miles - 17800. However, the 37K that the dealers initially threw at me is in line with the KBB and Truecar respective trade in values. Because of the condition and low miles, the dealer may stretch to 38K. I justify the seemingly low amount by considering the sales tax savings since I will pay sales tax on the cost of the new car minus the trade amount.

For fun, in 2023 I evaluated our 2021 X3 at Carmax. We purchased it new in 2020 for $55K had it had about 12-14k on the odo with 1.5 yrs of the original warranty left. They made an offer of $41K! I thought that was not shabby at all, but alas the wife did not want to part with it. She still barely drives it but likes the idea of having it around

Man, I wouldn't be able to get over the fact that I'd be taking almost a $40k loss trading the car in

Hence why I haven't traded the 540 in for an E92 M3 . I brought mine CPO in 2022. I'd still be taking a decent hit trading it in.

Exactly, this is what I was saying. I know it has low miles. You make a concession when you opt to trade vs. private sale. You get less, but you get the tax offset and you avoid the agita of selling privately and dealing with people, low ballers, no-shows, scammers, etc.

I was also thinking maybe another grand, but no way is a dealer giving anyone low 40's on a three year old 540 on trade.

Was it super early in 2023 when supply was low still - you know, the whole COVID thing? Trust me, I took advantage of that too on my Maserati trade for the M550. Unfortunately, those days are over.

I got an incredible deal on mine which was a CPO. It was fun seeing it be worth $10,000 more than I paid for a solid two years. That is all corrected and I don't want to know (but I do know) what it's "worth". Doesn't matter, I'm keeping this for the long run. I'll probably buy something else and put it away more than I do already. They will bury me in it.

Yeah, there is no way a dealer will give anyone low 40's for a 3-year-old 540. But, they'll list it in the low to mid 40's.

I think I got a decent deal on my 540. Paid $3k under KBB for it in 2022. But, I got 4k more than retail for the 09 328 I sold. I guess it was a win/loss situation.

I got an awesome deal on mine but I’d still get hammered if I traded it. I think I’d get around $40k. I paid $54k 13 months ago. They’re listed mid to high 40’s.

I didn’t make that up, that’s coming from and informal inquiry to a dealer manager I have a good relationship with.

On our X7 it would be about a $20k haircut after about 18 months of ownership, if we trade it in. But there would be about $4k in sales tax saved.

We’ll see what I do with time. Like you said, it’s a super sexy car. I like the look from the outside but I love the feel of the interior the most. Unfortunately, there is the matter of the seats. Which wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t being compared to M550 luxury seats.

I’ll quote myself… when I picked up my M550 yesterday and gave them back the 840, I texted Joe-BMW33 and said:

“Goshdamnit this thing is just f-ing hard to beat.”

"Agita" LOL. Don't hear that word used where I live now. It was however in everyone's vocabulary when I was living in Brooklyn, NY before I moved to FloriDUH.

Agita is the correct word when describing selling a car privately. Wouldn't even attempt unless it was a friend or family member. Too much can go wrong.

It most definitely was that (April 2023), which is why they gave me such an inflated rate. Which is also why I was really hoping my wife would bite on that offer. We just don't need two cars right now.

I’m nervous about a private sale as well. A lot of dishonest people out there

Yeah. Selling to a dealer just makes it so easy. Especially if you’re getting tax savings. I’m TN it’s 7%. You add that to a decent trade value and the economic impact gets pretty close to just selling it yourself. Close enough not to want to screw with it. If the trade offer is good enough, it can pretty much get you all the way there.
