Removes exhaust tips

Anyone have experience of removing the exhaust tips?

Simple or difficult?

Also anyone painted them black successfully?

I have seen a few posts where someone got a shop to cut and weld, but most shops won't touch this. The angles are tough.

I thought they was a way of just taking the stainless tip covers off.

I've seen somewhere, someone used a piece of wood and a mallet/hammer and was able to knock it off. I think it was user Junebug, Gotta search for it but he took them off and painted them black.

I'm speaking from an M550 perspective where the tips are all one piece to the axle back. Only way to change the tips is to get a new axle back with quad tips like the Dinan, or get a muffle shop to cut and weld something on.

It's annoying to have the left one become all black. I share your pain.

If it was me, I'd have them powdercoated for durability.

.....and I may just do that ...... when I finally get our car.

Think powder coat won't work as it too hot and will peel.

Needs specialist paint from what I have discovered in the forums.

Will keep you all informed as I do it over Christmas new year.

I knocked the tips off with a 2x4 and a hammer and sprayed the tips with high temp matte black spray paint (4-5 coats if I remember correctly). Another member baked theirs in the oven to cure the paint, I did not. You probably want to put a towel between the 2x4 or rubber mallet when putting the tips back on. Did it last summer and the tips still look great.

I was able to successfully paint my tips gloss black. Just checked and its been around 60 weeks since I did it and no issues.

To get them off, I warmed up the car for 5 mins or so. I found that with a warm exhaust, it's easier to take them off.

A mate of mine recommended to use Foliatec exhaust spray paint. This is an all in one primer, colour, laquer and hardener. I ended up doing around 3 coats. It recommends that you leave them for 7 days before putting them back on the car and exposing them to the high exhaust temps.

After 7 days, I coated them with some left over Gtechniq C5 wheel armour. I'm glad I did this as it makes cleaning them so easy.

Few pics below. For reference, I paid around £25 for the Foliatec spray. BMW do sell some black exhaust tips, but at £102 each I think the DIY is the better option!

I just had an exhaust shop cut and weld new pipes on. Added some carbon fiber tips and looks sweet. Trying to figure out how to post pictures.

Did this exercise these days and today I put them back but it seems I did not fit the left one correctly, as when I got home I realized I lost it!
I went out to search it on the road, but couldn’t find it…

Any idea if these covera can be bought separately?
It kind of looks like s*it without it

Thanks
