My SA, who I like a lot, is ADAMANT that I not switch to non run flats. He swears he’s seen transfer cases go out within ten thousand miles of swapping. I challenged him that the same size and same tire on all four wheels shouldn’t make a difference and he swears it does. He also said that if it came with runflat and I switch, and there is an issue, the first thing BMW will do is ask about the tires and if they’re different than factory.
Any input with some info I can take back to challenge this further? He makes me apprehensive enough to just say screw it and stick with the run flats. I wish Michelin made the 19” size PS4 AS runflat to fit our cars, but it’s too wide. If I had 20” wheels, they’d have runflats to fit. I went Pirelli last time and had one bubble (they covered it) and they’ve worn out in less than 20k miles. I know that’s partially on me. But I’m thinking about going with the Continentals this time. I don’t want to go back to the GY Eagle Sports.

Luck worked out… a new discount tire just opened up in the town where I was travelling to. They gave me a $500 deal off the tires I wanted (Pilot Sports 4S) and gave me a good credit on the emergency tire, and state sales tax is 3% less than in Texas. So doing that right now. 😁

i'm also on the G05 forum, and there are several posts from folks saying warranty repairs/replacements on their tires/wheels were denied due to not being OEM from factory. one guy wanted to switch from OEM 21" to OEM 20" and all the area indy tire shops and his dealership told him they wouldn't even mount them even if he purchased them |

personally, I don’t see how a switch from RFTs to same-sized non-RFTs adversely affects the transfer case. they’re the same OEM size! |

Over here when you order the car new, you have the option to have it delivered with run flat summer tires or non-RF summer tires. As for non-factory tires, well this links into the "star" mark controversy. Aside from being more expensive, it seems they are potentially another reason BMW could deny you a claim if something breaks. The magic of the star! |

I don't know about the whole star thing but on Tire Rack, neither the DWS06 nor the Michelin PS A/S seem to have the star mark (unless I missed it). I'm planning to replace my tires with DWS06 when the time comes and couldn't care less about the star mark. The BMW star marked tires on Tire Rack are not what I want and are much more expensive than the two options above seeing as they're both run flats (which I also don't want). I'll deal with any repercussions of that if/when it happens.
BTW, here too I've seen the option of configuring the car from factory with non-RFT tires so I'm a bit suspicious about what that dealership service advisor said.

The idea that one must run RF is rather silly, and I wonder where it got started. |

Many SA's are good salespeople with questionable mechanic experience. I've learned with BMW to always read between the lines and take what the SA says with a grain of salt, especially when it comes to conjecture. My brother is an M-certified master mechanic for BMW and he says this is complete and utter bullshit. I'll take my chances on what bro says.

When you state that star marked tires are more expensive, do you mean they're more expensive for the exact same tire without the star or are you comparing them to non-RFTs, which would be cheaper anyway.

I have seen that echoed on the forums a fair bit, but I'm running pure OEM so I can't claim to know how painful the process would be warranty wise. I do know I've had BMW be annoying on warranty claims at various points. BMW does seem to "push back" on claims at times. Not everyone is worried about warranty repairs though so it may be a complete moot point. Others may have dealerships that insulate them from any flack from BMWNA. YMMV. |
