M550 vs 750 M Sport

Asked on the G11 forum, so thought I’d put it here, too. Driving a 2021 750 M Sport tomorrow for a test.

Anyone have experience in both or just want to share opinions?

I’ve got to do brakes, tires, and probably buy extended warranty on my 2020 M550 in the next 9-12 months. I’m making my list and checking it twice, so to speak, before I spend the money to commit another 3-4 years on this one.

If I switched, it would be to one of these:

LCI M550 CPO
G11 750 M Sport

I think the X5 M50 is off the list but if one pops up locally, I’ll drive it. I know I want to stay V8 but I’m going to drive an LCI 540 tomorrow because it’s there, just to refresh myself on why I went V8 to begin with.

Yes, I have a car problem… sue me! I’d say 70% chance I stay put, 30% chance I swap to newer M550/750, 0% chance I go back to the 540.

The 750’s are the same price as the comparable M550’s on the CPO market, so that’s what made me think to check it out before I dismiss it. I think it will be too much of a boat. The M550 seems to be the perfect blend of size and power.

Sheesh, you’re incorrigible

That said, there was one car that caught my eye when I was shopping for my m550. An alpina b7 which cost about 10k more and has every feature under the sun, every single one, including a mini fridge and rear reclining, massaging, ventilated seats. Absolutely everything about it was absurd. 0-60 in 3.2s, 600hp+, 200+ mph top speed, shorter braking distance than an m2…

Sounds like a steal for just 10k more. What was the catch?

Jeez NGT2 are you really over the M550i already?! You just got it! Haha

Biggest catch was probably that the previous owner was a smoker. That, and the usual that you'd expect from a 7 series Alpina with an N63...a trifecta of high maintenance cost factors. Just too car in every way for me to seriously consider. Huge, passenger-oriented luxobarge. I'd probably take an M5 over it without too much thought, as would most, which is why they hold their value so much better.

I’d take the M5 too. The ironic thing is the main reason I’d shy from an M5 is long term maintenance… but I’d actually have to keep one long term to make that matter!

7 series long term cost scares me a little, but I’m comfortable with the powertrain.

Definitely a no for me.

I travel for work between coasts a lot. Early on, Enterprise kept on giving me the 7 series. It sucks! It felt like I was driving a boat.

Interesting. I’d think that kind of driving would favor the 7.

Haha I’m not over it. I’ll probably stay put. It would be smarter to stay put for 2-3 years then find a 2023 M550 with low miles. How great would it be to find a 2023 in Alvite (same color as mine but different name) with bowers and DHP and just restart with an LCI version of my exact car.

For me, selling a fully loaded M550i bought in 2022/2023 and replacing it in 2026 (assuming moving to a 3-yr old MY23 M550i) at a pretty substantial loss wouldn't make any sense especially given that MY21+ doesn't bring much to the plate over the MY20. It sounds even worse financially to offload what sounds like a low miles M550i at a substantial loss only to get into the same car that's barely 3 years newer, which is not that much given that these cars can easily be in top shape physically for 15+ years.

Anyway, just my thoughts and I'm a buy-and-hold kind of guy so my thought process about this is quite different than those who like to switch every few years. Purchasing a car is a good deal of an emotional decision so one does what makes one happy.

Had a new 7 series for about 3 weeks while my 550 was in the shop recently. The car was great on the highway but was not happy in the twisties. When I got back in my 550, it felt like a go cart compared to the 7.

On another note, did test drive a Tesla model Y Dual Motor yesterday. Knew going into it that it was no comparison to what I currently own but wanted to try one out. Car was fun, pleasant to drive and responsive. Interior left alot to be desired but for a inexpensive car, it was not that bad.

We are getting ready to do a bunch of vehicle shuffling in my household. Wife needs new X7, have a teen driving within a year and I'm wanting to try something electric. My 2022 m550 has been the best car I have ever owned aside from my 2017 540.

Don't like the direction the new 5 series has taken, it might grow on me but for the moment, it just isnt working.

Decisions, decisions, decisions......

My only itch in the BMW space is a late model F90 LCI M5C, honestly, nothing across the current BMW line even come close to tempting me. I always have the Porsche 911 itch, but I am stuck in procrastination hell about that. Similar procrastination hell on the M5C as I love my car, I have invested resources and sweat in getting it to where it is.

If the right (color, interior, options) M5C was local to me, that is a scenario where I might take the compulsive plunge. I look everyday at all the local dealers.

If this were local to me, but an LCI, I would probably be all over a car like this.

My bad, I live in East Coast and was flying out to Socal for a week every month. Did probably a few thousands miles in the 7 series there. It was horrible. I loved the Tesla S, did over 15k miles on those but Enterprise only had the 70D back then. A full charge only got me 230-250 miles.

That's one sexy car! And optioned so well. But 3 prior owners with just 15K miles 🫤 I don't even want to begin to imagine how it was treated...

I didn’t even catch that, probably because it’s not an LCI so I didn’t dig in. I agree, although two of the owners could be lease related reporting and titles.

yikes, i thought my 550 is already too boaty! granted i have a feeling it's the soft springs on the DHP spec. F90 base spring could be a winner on my car but the install one has to take apart the entire car to install! i don't want to touch anything lol.

do what you got to do though

The 750 is sweet, no doubt. Ultra luxury freight train that hauls ass. If you want to be the biggest swinging thing on the road and super fast in a straight line, it’s for you.

If you want to change directions or drive more aggressively than just mashing it in a straight line, the M550 is as big as you want to go.

I have DHP and I feel like it helps it drive less boaty with any level of aggression. I guess in conservative, smooth driving I could see what you mean but it is intended to make that kind of driving smoother. I think it does it’s intended job well on both ends of the spectrum.

I drove 4 cars. The only one that put a big smile on my face was the 330 (they didn’t have an M340). If I were going to replace it with something other than another G30 M550, I think it would almost 100% be a M340.

Will be harder to come across for a drive in my market, but cars I’d still like to drive and haven’t yet:

X6 M50

X3 M50

If I wanted the utility of an SUV while not feeling like I am driving an elephant, the X3 M40i (or now M50) would be my choice hands down. But I would just get a Macan S then.
