Yes - it's £1050-ish (these prices are Broadspeed's with a small discount) on an SE. The way I will rationalise this is that it effectively makes MSport a less expensive option....

Nice review and congratulations on the car! Agree with you about the E39 530 - one of BMW's most balanced cars and with truly excellent steering.

Yes, M5s have come with the alcantara headliner. I love it in my E39 M5 and it is definitely worth checking that box if you are going for a luxury feel for the interior.

Would be interested how the mpg evolves. This 530d to 540i transition may become a frequent question/struggle among us Europeans.

Great looking car and interesting write-up. Hope there will be a follow up once the run-in is done?

One question though, what are those things behind the sun visors in the roof? Two small, black objects.

Yes it really is. I am in same situation, having a F11 530d xDrive with MPPK, which I really like. The torque and fuel consumption is also nice. test drove a G31 540i, nice, but I missed the torque,, there is a difference, my F11 having 600 Nm and the 540i just 450 Nm. Have to test a 540i with MPPK when it's available.

If mpg is important to you unless you live up a mountain ditch the xdrive, better to drive without also IMHO.
My feeling is 45-50 530d and 30 ish 540 in my neck of the woods......

Microphones I think.

beat me to it. yes I think they are microphones. Pretty sure I had those in the F10 as well.

As regards dumping Xdrive for fuel economy. In the UK at least , the 540i is only available with xdrive, If you don't want xdrive you have to choose the 530i or 530e.

At least petrol is slightly cheaper than diesel in the UK which offsets it just a bit, Could argue if fuel economy is more important, the the 540i is probably not the logical choice! I'm not a high milage driver and this is not a company car so I can put up with lower economy than the 530d offered.

I'm thinking about a similar transition: from diesel to a 530i petrol... (bypassing the 520i that is closer in price to my current 520d, to ensure some kind of torque... )

I don't think you will be the only one going this route.
If the autumm budget contains any negative changes for diesel (which I strongly suspect it might) expect a swing from diesel to petrol.

Ah didn't know that, change of tack for BMW bringing them in line with Audi I guess. Shame.
If it was my own money and I didn't do so many miles I'd have the 540i over the 530d too !

there is a particularly bad stretch of road near where I live that in my f10 (19" wheels) would pull left and right quite badly.
The G30 doesn't exhibit this at all. How they have achieved this I do not know especially given the width of the tyres remains the same 245 front and 275 rear. larger wheels and low profile tyres (is the rolling radius the same or larger than the 19s on the f10?).
is there some clever electronics going on in the background via the electric steering motor or purely mechanical differences? or is it tyres?(goodyear eagle f1 ).
anyway very impressive.
Tires...

Summer tires are resistant to tramlining whereas Winter/All-Season tires love it. Also, even worn out summer tires tramline. On my F10, the tires started to tramline a lot by the end of the lease.

OP: Awesome and Thorough review.

Brake-by-wire brakes on this platform was a deal killer for me. Same reason why I would never buy an Alfa Romeo Giulia, even the Quadrifoglio. I went with a 340xDrive as a daily and couldn't be happier with the choice.

Mine is a company car, currently a 520d, so with the expected upcoming doom for diesels and the BiK saving, I've decided to go for the 530e.

I ordered before I'd driven one, but after having one for the day yesterday, I'm thoroughly pleased with the choice!

Now for the long wait! Build week 51
