IIHS Crash Test: The new 5 series is one of the safest cars avaialble
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com The G30 5 Series has "across-the-board good crashworthiness, an optional front crash prevention system with a superior rating, and available good-rated headlights." It's earned a Top Safety Pick + award – the highest rating that the organization bestows. The new 5 isn't the only model in BMW's lineup to earn the distinction, either. Both the 2 Series and 3 Series earned the "plus" rating, while the X1 got the next-best Top Safety Pick award (as did the Mini Cooper). The only other midsize luxury sedan (which the IIHS groups together with larger ones) to earn the plus rating is the Genesis G80. The Audi A6, Infiniti Q70, and Volvo S90 (somewhat surprisingly) all earned Top Safety Pick awards (sans the “plus”), with the Mercedes E-Class even more surprisingly having missed out altogether. They don't test M models because a car needs to sell enough for them to consider viable to test. The base 5-series is expected to sell in greater numbers so unfortunately you only get an idea. Which sucks cause the M cars tend to be much different under the hood and other components.
Otherwise BMW has a winner in their hands here

Hopefully because they are going up, like it or not. Only two US insurance companies made a profit last year due to such heavy losses.
Our newfound multitasking heavily distracted drivers have paved the way for a steady increase in premiums. |

Unfortunately, this is also very bad for insurance companies as their rates will come down which means less revenue (but fewer claims). However most insurance co's don't always shoot for an underwriting profit. They look for free float of premiums to invest elsewhere (this is how Buffett crushed the markets with Geico's free and ever growing float). As revenues go down so will the free float to invest and they will make less money. Either way the underwriters today and tomorrow will be same as always and run at small loss, breakeven or small gain on the insurance part. It's the investment piece where all the hay is made I'm glad to see the new 5's have fared this well though. I'm looking at the M550i to replace my F10 M5. Still waiting to drive one with adaptive suspension so I can compare it to my true M. If it doesn't hold up next to my M in that regard I'll have to wait for the new M5 which requires patience! I didn't realize they don't crash test the M's as pointed out above by another poster? |

They will double the premium after the accident/speed tickets or simple increase the premium by 10% on the renewal quote. They always increase the price no matter what.

It's a shame that the test vehicles have the full digital dash but the production units don't.....

It's interesting that the windows are moving up immediately after crashing. Wondering if it's designed to be like this for some safety reason, or it's just the crash triggered the circuit by accident.

I would have thought it would be worthwhile also simulating an offset rear impact aswell.that would mimick someone crashing into you on say a freeway/motorway at speed that's trying to steer out of the way.
i would like to think that BMW test this internally but we rarely see any of those videos. I hope they test beyond what governments and euroncap / IIHS test on as well. |

Same chassis. A base 5 series crash test suffices for all variants in the 5er lineup; same applies for all other models.

It is a part of the crash safety system. I believe all European cars do this. Just like some of them turn the 4 way flashers one when it has been in a wreck.
