Yet another bad run-flat example
Just like folks said… hit a pothole on I-45 south of Dallas at 70 and destroyed the sidewall. I even only got the 19” wheels thinking I’d have a bit more rubber. Hah.
BMW roadside was incredibly useless, too. I can’t believe how poor the quality was since I last used them (decade ago). I gave up and called a local tire place instead since we are on a long road trip. |

I have 20 run flats on my m550 feel like it’s a ticking bomb. I’m considering a full size wheel and tire spare for road trips tired of taking the wife’s truck. The roads in north east stink

Is best to avoid pot holes
What tyre (tire) pressures you running?

I feel the pain. Found a meteorite crater the other night and my Pirelli run flat came out like this. Surprisingly, it held air, allowing me to limp home. The 20” 668m wheel came away less than round, unfortunately.

You getting the PS4 AS runflats or non runflats? I have 19’s. Pre LCI but size is the same. I want to get the PS4 AS tires and will need tires soon. I think the make a runflat for the Corvette but it’s a different size. I guess I’ll probably just get a modern spare kit and get the non runflats.

Mark - Mike (eliphil) was asking me about spare options. I know you got a good kit. Which one was it and is there a max mileage you can drive on the spare?

Everything comes in a bag and it fits perfect in the trunk using the tie downs. Not sure on miles, but i'd imagine quite a lot. I think I bought mine on sale for around $425 that included the jack, spacer......everything. https://modernspare.com/product/2017...e-kit-options/

Front pressure is near optimal for the Goodyear. Pothole at 70 is going to be a problem for just about any low-profile tire.

I’ve got to get new tires soon and I really want to get the PS4 AS tires but they only come in non runflat for 245/40/19. They make a runflat for 19’s for the Corvette but it’s 275/35/19. I’ve never seen anyone talk about running a square setup with that size, only using it for rears on a staggered setup.

The 20" staggered setup that these M550i come with, the diameters on those 245/35 front and 275/30 are different as well. Use tire size calculator and do quick comparison before making the purchase. |

I've owned three BMWs with run flat tires, but I am not sure that it's the tires that bear all the blame. To keep up with fashion trends, the manufacturers must offer larger and larger wheel/tire combinations and that result in taller rims and shorter tire sidewalls. Considering its a run-flat's stiff sidewalls that support the vehicle in the event of a puncture, the engineering of these tires is quite difficult. The stiff sidewalls result in a very heavy tire carcass, that works against it (in the form of inertia) when hitting a pothole. Wheels are more often damaged too. Hence BMW dealers flogging wheel and tire insurance at the time of purchase.
While I personally hate runflat tires, conventional tires, no matter the manufacture, mounted on 19 and 20-inch wheels will fare no better with potholes. The laws of physics will still apply. Just go back to 17" wheels and these issues will largely go away. |

If you hit a pothole at speed with a low-profile tire, you are done for (usually). Runflat makes no difference. Last pothole I hit was 15 years ago when I lived in DC, and it destroyed my Pilot Sport. Potholes seem not to exist in most of Western Europe, or I have become an exceptional driver. |
