I guess some prefer the DCT over the ZF? I've spent time with both in F30/F80 applications and I would take the DCT every time.

My goodness the DCT loss is a huge issue
While Porsche has developed a 8 speed DCT, BMW M will move to the 8 speed? WTF!!! There is a significant difference in feel between a DCT and a torque converter automatic. It's apparent in the first mile of driving a car. It isn't as big a deal as loss of the NA engine, but still, it's significant. The M5 has always been well received and even turbocharged it gave the Panamera a good run. DCT is a part of this. What a fail. Seriously. Ugh |

Why in gods name would BMW build an automatic M car??? That is just stupid! I wanted this car, but without DCT,I'm out. I'll just get another M3... lame!!!
Is it absolutely certain that DCT will not be an option? |

Hopefully BMW with its partners will engineer a great DCT(at least 8 gears) designed for xDrive applications able to handle 1200+ Horsepower and torque for the next generation ///M vehicles.
I was surprised and disappointed about the Auto transmission decision also. It just doesn't seem normal for the M5 to only have an auto! That said, the ZF 8 speed is arguably the best auto available that can handle all that power in the xDrive. 0-60 and 1/4 mile times should be very fast and Tuners are going to have a great time with this car! I would still buy the M5 because of the sum of amazing features and dynamics of the vehicle.

Going from a ZF8 in my 435i to a 2013 M3 with the old gen DCT is a night and day difference. I would never go back to an auto ever again. The DCT is superior to the ZF in every single possible way and I honestly don't understand why BMW isn't going to put a dct in this car...

On the first video at the end of the 10th minute it looks like a new AMG wagon that is following the M around the track (at first I thought it was an RS6, not sure).... point is that it sounds a lot better than the M whatever the hell it is.
That said, proportions on the M look great. I'm very excited about this car. |

Can't wait!
Autobox blues aside, it is going to Ben nice to get back behind the wheel of 600+ motor which will plant its power down when you burry the pedal.
Actually, no, BMW stop messing around and put DCT back on the menu. Enough compromises. The M5 is an icon and brand shaper and you should not go backwards on things poineered in the past. |
