Carbon fiber!
Hope the next m5 will have a carbon fiber roof and shed about 300lbs...

The M5 will be 180kg lighter, or 400lbs (396lbs) All just rumours at this point in time though... |

Don't quit just yet. Remember, the next gen M3 is going to be more powerful than the E9x M3, with a target weight of the E46M M3.

I don't think that Rolf Kacher is right, when he claims the new 530 to 535 as the new 6-cylinder B57/B58 models ... according to my informations in the future BMW lineup the .3x numbers would be the bigger 4-cylinders B47/B48 and the new 6-cylinder B57/B58 would get .4x numbers.
Greetings BMW M3 CRT . |

Has no one read the original article that the OP linked to?
There's a lot more info there than what has been posted here. Shared platform between 3-4-5-6 series etc. Google translate helps if you don't read German Quote:

It would be great if they took a page out of their old playbook (or Caddy's new playbook, see cts) and bring back the idea of an athletic larger midsize car... but I guess that's what the 3er will be (is) and now the 2er will be what the 3 once was... 10 yr from now we will be bitching about how heavy and bloated the 2 series is!

Wow beautiful. I love the rear slope line. Kind of reminds me of the current 6GC but less slope-y.
Not a fan of the lower portion of the front. Looks like it fits an SUV/SAV better. Otherwise, everything is good. dL |

What incredible extremes, a 3 pot oil sipper on one end and 600 hp at the other.

No worries, by 2018 a significant number of us will be driving one or another flavor of Tesla, while others launch a 50km electric effective range dinosaurs...err...new cars..
As far as I can see, the era of the internal combustion is rapidly drawing to a close, and car makers will have to stop sniffing the gas fumes and seriously embrace the electric technology if they want to be relevant 10 years from now. 50 km effective range?! That's less than 35 miles. Chevy Volt had similar range back in 2010! I can think of another dominant market participant who did not adapt fast enough to changing market dynamics...of course, that is just one's opinion... |

Why would they be rumors? 2014 Cadillac CTS is almost 300lbs lighter than 2013 CTS. 2014 CTS-Sport is almost 400lbs lighter than 550. If Cadillac can shed weight with mix of alloy suspension components and aluminum, why not BMW? BMW should do better since they now have advanced carbon fiber composites as used in I series cars. If BMW keeps building porky cars while everyone is going lighter, they will fail pure and simple. Either evolve or loose market share. Competitor offerings are much better now so the days of BMW being the only game in town are long gone.

Some more info - not 5 series related
They are also talking about the next gen X1 model (front wheel drive) and a X1M (all wheel drive standard) with 2L turbo and 320HP. Could this be the first hint towards a M2?
Der Allradantrieb ist Serie in Verbindung mit den stärksten Vierzylindern und im X1M, der mit seinem hoch aufgeladenen und 320 PS starken Zweiliter-Motor den Audi RS Q3 verblasen soll. |

There can be absolutely no question that the M5 needs to shed some pounds. It is way too heavy. Too heavy for the track now days.
I think they need to aim for a 250kg reduction to get it back to around 1600kg. |

Looks good......Nice evolutionary design - F10 is still the best looking midsize sedan by far esp in Msport!
