The LCI refresh model for the current F07/F10/F11 5 Series begins production this month, but BMW has already begun testing the next generation 5 Series. We've spotted the next gen 5 Series Touring here.

The next 5 Series is said to be shedding some weight, hopefully by way of the carbon fiber technologies which the next generation G11 7 Series will receive.

At this early testing stage, much of the car is still covered in heavy camouflage, but we've put together some comparison photos below.

Expect to see the next 5 Series revealed in 2016.

Next Generation 5-Series Spied

I can't get the pictures over here directly. But here is the translation along with the link.

http://www.autozeitung.de/erlkoenige...tbau-gn-401330

A few weeks ago, BMW has unveiled the facelift for the current 5-series, but in the background, Bayern have been working long at the next step: Starting 2015, the successor to the current generation (F10) come on the market and test work for it has been going on now in full swing - our Erlkönig hunters, a first prototype of the new BMW 5 Series Touring 2016 is already down before the lens!

BMW 5ER 2015: ERLKÖNIG SHOWS NEW LIGHTWEIGHT UPPER CLASS
The top priority in the development of a strict diet, because BMW will make the current bestseller of the premium luxury class much easier. It adds new engines that enable compliance with the required CO2 limits and of course the customer will save you money at the gas station.

But the 2015 BMW 5 Series will not only lighter and more efficient, Bayern want their premium series also train yourself even more comfort and luxury. Another update for the communication and infotainment package ConnectedDrive will also be on board to launch such a huge armada of assistance and safety systems that will allow, among other things, the fully automated driving in traffic.

Edit: I got the pics, but I had to save them on the mobile site from my iPhone then upload them on photo bucket, so the quality isn't the best.

if it has a front end that resembles the current 3 series.... its gonna look like crap IMO.

I absolutely hate the new 3 series front, especially the headlights.

We need to see the Sedan version to see how the greenhouse and hoffmeister kink will be differed. Those aspects are so perfect on the F10 IMO.

My thoughts on it via a thread I started on it on another forum:

http://www.autozeitung.de/erlkoenige...tbau-gn-401330

It's actually quite scary to think about where they will go from such a perfectly balanced, timeless and just purely well done design to me.

My prediction is it will be like a not-so-drastic version of the E39 to E60 transition. The E39 was so perfectly timeless, so smooth, non-fussy, just as balanced as a design can get. BMW felt they couldn't improve on that type of language so did something totally different, enter E60. The F10 I feel is BMW's case-study in bringing back the sophisticatedly tasteful, non-gimmicky, purely timeless styles, rounded corners and shapes (round shapes are generally considered more timeless than angular shapes), etc.

Where will they go from there? I think once again they'll find themselves in a bind by trying to improve upon the F10 if they try and work too closely off of the F10 formula (i.e they'd probably end up putting out a car that appears identical).

So I "predict" to see the typical angularification of what are currently smooth/rounded/curvy edges, and we already can see the F10's perfectly straight character line that is harmoniously matched to the glasshouse direction and stance of the car will now be an ascending one that starts to go in its own direction a'la F30, E90 and the plethora of cars with that type of line. I predict sharpened headlights like most cars today instead of the smooth and timeless rounded ones in the F10.

To go further; I "predict" we'll see some "fussy'ness" added to what is the F10 formula, i.e perhaps more outwardly complex sheetmetal surfaces instead of the very subtly-yet very complex sheetmetal on the F10 (think perhaps more overstated elements than the currents very understated). Like with more angular and sharpened edges.

Apparently it will lose a lot of weight, which of course is gonna make for a totally different driving character I'm sure.

Also it seems like they're unfortunately moving to shorter (6 year) model years which is uncharacteristic of a Premium Car. Maybe it's because their facelifts are so subtle as to protect the pre-LCI designs from getting "dated" prematurely, the tradeoff being one full year shaved off of the entire production run. Instead of something like what Mercedes does which is blatant about-fact changes mid-cycle, instantly dating the pre-facelfit cars.

Interesting analysis on the design. While the F10 is a very classic look, I think its just time to move on honestly (then again I like the E60's design so many may disagree with me lol).

One thing I would like to ask F10 owners (because honestly I don't haven't spent much time with the F10) is how does this prototype look size wise compared to the F10? I know the overall length isn't accurately portrayed because of the cammo, but to me the wheelbase looks a good bit longer than the F10. Any thoughts?

I was trying to look into the wheelbase as well. The F10 has one of the best wheelbase-to-length ratios on the market (I haven't found a car yet with a longer wheelbase-to-length ratio in fact) so I wonder how this one will compare. I also wonder how much larger it could be since the F10 is already so big.

Perhaps the wheelbase will be longer along with the length. However, the wheelbase to the rest of the cars proportions seem about the same to me maybe. Not sure what others think?

Yeah the F10 is definitely a very classic look. I always prefer classic and timeless themes which is why the car always attracted me so much. It's also why I still think the Mercedes W211 E Class (previous body) is perhaps more alluring than the new W212 body.

IMO the F10 design may shine best after its production run is up, i.e in terms of holding up for an out-of-production car, putting it in line with IMO modern classic sedans such as the E39 and M-B W211 designs.

I'm excited to see what the new 5er brings regardless.

fat-porker def needs to go on a diet..... unfortunately CF will raise the cost tremendously. hood line looks integrated into the kidneys, which is nice and better than the cut-across hoodl line on the current Fxx models....
