Seriously considering trading my 2021 540i M Sport for the 8 series
Been visiting a couple dealers in my area looking at the 840i and M850i. I love my 2021 540i M Sport but the 8 series coupe really catches my eye.
The dealers I have visited are playing ridiculous games such as adding junk fees galore like inflated registration/title fees and other nonsense such as pre-installed third-party lojack type systems. Also, they are not budging from the MSRP even though the cars I looked at have been in their inventory for at least a month. BMW is offering nice rebates that exceed 5K with BMW loyalty on 2024 models. The 2025s are also showing up now which seems early. The M850i is about 15K more than the 840i which is not that bad. However, I like the B58 engine due to familiarity with it since my 540i has the same. I hear mixed reviews on the 8 cyl in the M850i. The increased power would be fun though. Any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated. Thanks Last edited by AnthonyVincent; 04-22-2024 at 12:25 PM.. Reason: typo in title |

What are the mixed reviews you are hearing on the M550 TU2/3? Reliability has proven to be on par with the B58. If anything, it might be too powerful for some people.
I am biased, but if I'm going 8-series, it has to be the M850 or M8C. To me it's kind of like getting a 7-series with an I6. Some cars are meant to run the V8 and the 8-series is one of them, especially for the price tag. I am personally not a fan of the ass of the 8-series. I just don't care for the design and the duckbill spoiler. It reminds me of the Supra, but that's just one persons opinion and I am in the minority. Are you leasing? They are having trouble moving these cars. So much inventory out there. I would lease as I think they are going to take and extra hard hit on value. I question how long BMW will actually stick with an 8-series. I heard they were going back to the six after this cycle of 8's.

Some good points here. Much appreciated. I was planning on buying. Not a fan of leasing. Your point on depreciation is spot on. I am concerned about that. Not just because of the car itself but instead, the starting 100k+ price point in an economy that seems to be not the healthiest. As for the mixed reviews on the engine, they were based more on longevity/reliability. I really wouldn't let that sway me since I would get an extended BMW warranty. |

ANYWAY, I am babbling. Personally, if I were you, I would be getting a 2023 M5C with a few thousand miles on it for less money. Pretty much all of us here have had great luck with the N63TU2/3 and some are up there on miles. I do have an extended warranty though. Selfishly hope you stay in the G30 family. You're a good contributor here.

Admittedly, I can be somewhat impulsive at times. I do like the 8 series, especially the M850i. We'll see. These responses I am getting are extremely helpful in tapering that impulsivity. Thank you |

Yeh I also think if you’re going for a 8, to go for one if the v8 models.
There are a couple of threads in this forum about the 540 versus the 550. The different character of these great engines is highlighted, worth a search and read. Even if you don’t plan to use the extra power these v8 offer, they do offer an effortless delivery of power which is attractive in its own right. As state buying an 8 will be pricy in terms j on g depreciation so I guess it depends how long you want to keep. I think you need to at least try driving a 550/850/m8 to get an idea on whether the v8 is for you it not. My money is on you going for one if you do! |

I'd maybe tend toward the 850 if the reliability were certain (mostly for the looks and sheer grunt), but if this is a DD and a keeper, I would shy away. The character of the car will be different with the I6 vs. the V8. Handling and the lightest reasonable weight usually come first for me, but the 8 isn't a straight sports coupe, so the V8 might be more fitting if you want to go more in the lux direction. I feel like all of the upper range BMs are like this now. You can get a good amount of sport, or simply go more in the Merc direction and configure a cruise ship. |

On fees alone I saved 2.8K, and pricing was way better too so all in about 7-8K. I drove back with the car and got to visit family along the way as an added bonus.

This could be a good option for me since the dealers in South Florida are all into playing games. Don't understand why these dealers still need to play the endless back and forth games. Consumers have the online tools to be very informed shoppers and the antics on display at the dealerships only dissuade shoppers. At least it does for me. I walked out of 2 dealerships in frustration. |

The ones I had a really good experience with price wise, quality of pre-owned cars, and low fees and who I seriously pursued cars with were BMW of Sterling, VA, United BMW, GA, and Bergstrom BMW, WI. I'd say be open to buying from anywhere in the country. If I saw inflated fees, I immediately walked away, but I have to say I generally received respectable quotes from most dealers I dealt with countrywide but some were priced higher than others due to local market conditions.

I have always found that prices in Texas are more favorable than anywhere else and the dealers there are very willing to work with out of state sales and shipping with minimal fees.

The 8GC is awesome. I had an 840GC loaner for like 4-5 days. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It drives different than the G30. Its wider and maybe lower and you can feel it. It drives smaller than it is. It handles tighter than the G30 but it’s still very comfortable on the road. I’m sure the weight and wheelbase helps there.
I think M850 could very well be my next car over a newer LCI M550, whenever I decide that time has come. If nothing else, for something a bit sportier and also something different. The interior is luxurious looking while also sportier than the G30 interior. It’s like sitting in a cockpit. Very tight but not cramped. It keeps you right where you want to be. They also have great interior color combos and all options are merino. But there is one big downside or disadvantage to the G30 - the seats. It’s not a less comfortable ride, in my opinion. Tighter, different, but not less comfortable. However the seats are less comfortable. They just are. For me, it’s how narrow they are. That would be okay if the bolsters would widen a bit more but they don’t. And the upper lumber support adjustment isn’t quite high enough to allow my upper back to rest against the seat comfortably, without having to have the seat back too upright for my liking. I got used to it and it can be comfortable enough, it’s just not going to be like the G30. I’ve also read the F90 is more comfortable, as far as seats go. Apparently, the M5 seats are too wide and could not be fitted into the 8 series, and that’s why the 8 has the seats it does. This tracks with me, since my main observation is that they’re a tad too narrow. But it’s a badass car! Even being used to the V8 in my M550, I had a lot of fun driving the 840. The presence of the car and driving dynamics make it a fun drive, even without the V8 oomph that I’m used to.
