G30 5 Series Touring Hits the Ring

G30 5 Series Touring Hits the Ring

COMMENTS

We've seen the next (G30) generation 5 Series touring out on the public roads before, but the prototype has now ratcheted up its testing by taking to the Nurburgring.

At this early stage of testing with heavy camouflage, it's hard to discern much of the exterior and interior design. But, the front grilles are now semi-visible and the hood cutline appears to have shifted to meet the kidney grilles, just as on the next generation G11 7 Series.

Like the G11 7 Series, the next 5 Series is said to be shedding weight by use of some carbon fiber construction together with steel and aluminum. Early rumors/info is that the G30 will be built on BMW's next generation platform called "35up", upon which all future models from the 3-series/5-series and up will be built.

Previously Autocar and Car Magazine have reported that the new 3-cylinder BMW engine will power one or more of the G30 generation models. The new modular platform of BMW engines allows for a common family of motors which will range from 3 to 6 cylinders in a variety of displacements. As usually, expect the range to go from super fuel efficient (they are quoting a 72mpg version of the 3-cylinder engine!) to super fast.

The first of the G30 generation models should arrive in the Summer of 2016.

See the latest G30 spy pics below, with some early comparison photos against the current F11 touring.

Yes. The Gt is hideous. I'll take the wagon any day.

Oh sure, they tease us Americans with a wagon.... Get rid of the horrid GT, BMW!

Then make a G31 M5 wagon!

Once again.
It is a mule that is more about what's underneath than what it shows externally.
Its main external reveal is that it is using the G30 front section and chassis but using the current F11 body shell.
The interior is the current F01 7er.
You will of course very , very soon see the first G30 prototypes using the actual body in a matter of weeks.

Do not expect the G31 in North America. There is no market.
BMW have now given the green-light to accommodate the North American market with seven seater variants of the next generation X1 and X3 models to increase appeal to customers that need extra passenger flexibility over the existing standard SAV models. It will allow BMW to offer customers three choices of X vehicles Standard - Long - Sport Activity Coupe.

Damn it to hell. Bring the 5er touring back, especially with an I6 diesel. Still so bitter that we didn't get that, that would hands down be my daily driver until the day I die.

The standard car looks a little like this at the front , although with a more technical look on the front end. The headlights teased in recent concepts finally become a reality.

Can we please have this in the US, and send the GT to some other continent/planet/solar system?

The F31 is nice and all, but we need more wagon and engine options!

According to what Jason wrote, there will be 3 to 6 cylinders. Where is the 8 cylinder?!

...did you say concept headlights?!?! Didn't think they were making it to production cars after seeing the F30 LCI prototypes without them. Wish they made it on to the F8Xs.

and btw - screw u BMW for dicking us out of all the good wagons. I'm buying an E-Class AMG Wagon , or a new C-Class AMG Wagon if they release one, after I give my E91 to my kids. then I'll be done with the brand completely. well played.

Not a big fan if this is how it looks. So vanilla...I was hoping there would be a truly evolutionary styling change after the reserved and timeless F10 coming from the controversial E60. This just looks safe, half ugly, and the rear will just be anonymous.

Just hope we can tell each series apart. Really hope that BMW doesnt become like Audi. Mercedes is catching up in the looks department. Maybe im alone on this but i really liked Chris Bangle's designs..they stood out from every other car on the road, unlike those recent designs, such as the x5/6.

Lets wait and see

Exactly my thoughts. I just want a badass wagon. Merc brought us the E63 wagon, why can BMW bring us something? Cadillac had the CTS-V wagon also. I'm trying to be loyal, but at the end of the day BMW isn't offering the products that I want to buy from them in North America, or at all.

Ew, those headlights worked on the 4 concept, and the 4 concept only.

Summer 2016 Jason?

The F10 debuted in 6/2010 as a 2011 model. That would mean only a 6 year lifespan for it instead of the normal 7.
