Reversal of Opinion on G30 Comfort after 5 months- Love this car!

I've never owned a car that took me 5 months to warm up to, nor get comfortable on seats that I hated originally. BMW grows on you! There are so many things I love about this car. My 23-530IX has a Luxury Seating package, Multi-contour seats (tested in Germany in Sensatec and loved them) with Leather (Stiffer than the Sensatec). In the USA you are forced to order leather and my massage function makes the seat stiff. Suddenly they are comfy after 5 months of use.

I almost sold the car in the first few months. Suddenly these seats are extremely comfortable (Not sure if they get softer) and the ride quality of the car also seems better. The things that impress me about the G30 are the quality of the interior (easy knobs on the dash and steering wheel), the Premium feel of all touch areas, and the Driver Assistance PRO package. MPG is also averaging 35 on the highway which is the same as my A6 TDI. BMW tech is surpassed by none. Simply said, it is just a pleasure to drive long distances, and as What Car usually says "Office on wheels". I completely agree. Even auto high beams that gradually illuminate add to the Kool factor of this car. Also, the car is dead quiet on the highway. What's not to like? I have to think hard on this one. The doors close with a cheap feel (Not a thud), and the wiper fluid can't be a quick touch of the stalk versus a longer pull for fluid to come out. Also, the back seats when folded flat have that metal that hangs down preventing me from easily sliding my bike back there (Catches the metal). Overall love this car and don't see any reason to upgrade to the G60.

haha i think your butt has broken into the seat

i was riding a bike with soft seats for a few months and my butt was so sore, i bought a race seat and the butt was perfect

stopped riding for 3 years (did other activity) and last week i got back on the race seat bike and the butt was hurting after 1 min

i was thinking man my butt was perfectly broken into the seat last time but now it's new and raw and needs another break in

I've had my car for three years (today actually) and I am still trying to get the right position. It's comfortable, but I know it can be better. I like to sit low and I think that's the problem.

certainly not the most comfortable seats compared to my Audi A6 or even the new G60, but the positions on the MC seats are numerous.

Funny. It’s so subjective. I think the G30 multi contour seats are extremely comfortable. I change the position to fit my mood but it’s always supremely comfortable.

Agreed, I really should mess with seating positions a lot more than I do and set the memory for each. I need a higher position, I pretty much ride with the seat on the floor. Make it a bitch rolling in and out of it.

I’ve got a setting high and a setting low to fit my mood. In the fall and winter, I do a setting that’s further back for when I’m wearing cowboy boots. I definitely mess with my seat settings as my moods or the seasons change and my preferences change with them.

One thing is constant - I never get the neck and shoulder pain I used to get in previous cars. It’s nerve related, I think, and it’s worse if my posture or position is a certain way. The G30 seat just fits me well, I guess. I used to get the pain at work and I got a standing desk and that’s gotten rid of it, too. Even if my standing posture isn’t great, it doesn’t trigger it like sitting in the desk chair and slouching. I’m a bad sloucher.

Our area at work got one of those to try-out. It adjusted up & down as desired. The chief came up one day and asked how we liked the desk. I told her that raised-up, it was the perfect place to hang a hammock and catch a few winks on the midshift. She didn't seem to appreciate the humour.

The biggest problem with the g30 seats is also its biggest strength - the number of adjustments.

I’m convinced they’re the best in class, though it’s subjective. For me it was bmw 5 >= Audi a6 > Mercedes e , comparing multi contour seats with ventilation and massage across all 3. BMW has the most adjustments, which is a double edged sword as the seat can torture you until you get it right. When you do, bliss. It took me weeks if not over a month for it to feel right. It’s so complicated that I wish they had better documentation in the manual, or some pointers for best practices.

With so many adjustments, I would never be sure if I found THE one. As long as I'm not uncomfortable, I don't play with the settings to try to find the goldilocks zone. So far so good.

Yes agree with others that the comfort seats are amazing but the downside is finding the right position. When they are out of position they can be uncomfortable but once you have it set right, they just feel right.

I know a lot of people tend to have their seats more towards a lower position but I don’t. I’m 5’10” and have my comfort seat base at its highest setting. I also have the back fairly upright having taken the effort to adjust the upper back rest ( the unique selling point of this seat arguably) so that the head restraint is just behind my head . The front of the seat base is raised up to its max which supports my thighs. I have no need to extend the seat base out
I sit closer to the steering shell then probably most
This position gives me a great view out, I can see the corners of the car which helps to place it on the roads. My arms are relaxed and my elbows are pretty much at 90 degrees which makes it relaxed to hold the wheel for extended periods of time
The steering wheel is lowered to the point where the top rim is just above the camera in the instrument cluster so the driving assistant features continue to work utilising this feature

The 550 I test drove had sports seats and felt the seat base didn’t go up as high as the comfort seats built what felt quite a noticeable amount although it may have only been an inch or so

I have a pretty bad back. For me the seats literally are torturous if set wrong. I’ll be in pain even during a short drive. This happens in multiple cars but somehow the g30’s make it really extreme. They’re either horrible or sublime. My f30 was not the same way. I didn’t have to put in much effort to get it comfortable.

But as the video shows, there are 3 key areas. I think of it like trying to match a dining chair.

1. Rear cushion should be pretty close to upright, 100 degrees or so
2. Bottom cushion should be raised as much as possible
3. Lumbar support should be the bare minimum to make you comfortable, and fill in the gap between your back and the seat cushion.

Sounds painful and I'm glad that the G30 has all those settings available. Seeing as I will be hanging onto it for several years, I may need such adjustments myself in the future. I am very very close to the settings you listed, which is probably why I haven't needed to adjust further.

Yes sounds very much like what I have set

Among the best seats I’ve experienced. The others were ( a long way back now) we’re Volvo and Saab, both manufacturer were I think known for their seats aswell

It is such an important part of the car as you are in contact with the whole time

I agree with your position, but most would not. I also like as high up as possible (Wish they would go higher) and close to the steering wheel. One issue in finding a comfortable position is I had the seat extender (Front bottom ) out which reduces comfort for normal driving. Now that I have retracted it my legs drop straight down (More comfortable). on long highway drives, if I put the seat further back, I will extend the front bottoms. I sit in a race car position, but if an accident occurs, I am a bit too close to the steering wheel. One odd thing as someone said earlier all the positions should not be necessary. In an Audi A4 with few adjustments, the seats are comfy all the time. In the 530 I feel, you need to play with the positions a long time or often while driving. I think my Nappa leather is softening up perhaps.

I have a high seat setting and a low laid-back setting saved into memory. I usually switch between the two A couple times on long rides.

I’m 2 years in and still have not found my sweet spot but overall the seats are very supportive and comfortable. I like to be a little higher and sit almost straight up. It should be simple for me. The massaging feature is pretty lame and the heat is below avge

There is a setting in the iDrive to adjust the heat. My seat came on today when we were driving in Bryce Canyon today. It was 31º and snowing! I digress... my seat was so warm on the lowest setting I had to turn it off.

Yes you can adjust the distribution heat regarding the back and bottom.
You can set a temperature that it automatically turns on along with steering wheel if you have that
I’ve always found the set heating pretty hot to be honest and have to turn it off after a short while
