Perhaps this thread should have its own forum sticky for future reference.

Agree, but more importantly anyone on the forums know how to escalate something like this to a recall so BMW does the leg-work for us since we're not on their payroll?? I have 4,500 mi on my G30 sedan and have had no issues yet, but now I'm informed and aware.

I took mine in this week for its first 10k mile service and inquired about the coolant loss after getting the message and refilling my car's two tanks. The dealer inspected, pressurized the system, and found no issues. I guess I will just keep an eye on it.
On the upside, I asked if there was an iDrive update to fix CarPlay compatibility issues and the update they installed seems to have made a difference. |

it's amazing they still can't do (or really won't do) update over the air in these times...

I had the problem including the nearly impossible to remove tank cap and signs of venting around the cap.. Dealer pressure tested the system and replaced the cap about 4,000 miles ago. Problem appears to be solved.

I've had a bit of an idea about why all sorts of our engines are losing a bit of coolant over time. I was sorting out my engine bay today, giving it a bit of a clean and topping up screenwash and I noticed that the coolant reservoir is formed in two parts - a lower section, and then an upper section with the cap. At the join level I could see a very very small amount of residue, suggesting that liquid was perhaps escaping between the two sections. It was only a very small amount, and that would tally with the level only dropping just a bit over time... What do others think? Could this be a potential reason for coolant loss particularly in the B58 engine?

I thought I would just update everyone as it happened to me again at 11,500 miles. I received the low coolant notification and had to put in a little bit of coolant in the main large tank. No signs of leaking anywhere but its got to be going somewhere...

Anyone know what coolant I should add? My dealership is over an hour away, and I’d like to add my own if possible. Not seeing any mention of type in the manual.. but maybe that’s because it doesn’t matter what type? M550i xdrive I just picked up second-hand with 10k miles.

Thank you for the quick reply! I have no issue buying the BMW brand stuff- It is a hassle to order it though when I just bough the car and I'm already getting engine lights 😒. I want to drive this thing and not wait for this stuff to ship LOL! A local Autozone has this Pentafrost Part Number: 8114117 Coolant that says it's manufactured to the same spec as OE. I am tempted to put a bit of this into the car until my order of a few gallons of the BMW stuff arrives... Is that a horrible idea?? Based on your previous reply, it seems that I should just be patient for the genuine stuff to get here My vehicle is still under warranty, and I'm taking it into the dealer in a about 10 days to have two open recalls fixed (apparently the previous owner ignored them?). I would think a coolant leak should be fixed under warranty, am I correct? |

Keep a bottle of coolant handy. If the level is low the car will let you know as soon as you open the door while the engine is still cold.
