The PITA about the transfer case is that xdrive fluid is $60/liter (you need less than 1 liter iirc) and then you need to reset the clutch adaptations after putting in the new fluid. That has to be done with a scan tool with BMW software, not a generic one iirc. I have a buddy with a shop so it's easy for me, but DIY folks need to know it's not like changing out the diff fluid.
Good to know I will probably do the diffs at the same time as well. I will take it somewhere to do it all as well but im sure its going to be expensive.

I’ve looked all through the owners manuals to find a capacities page. This does not seem to exist, specifically the oil capacity for the 2023 M550i. I can find all kinds of info on oil type, checking level, etc.

There is nothing I can find referring to oil change, oil capacity, with and without filter. How does one know how much oil to use without manufacture reference?

Look in the index at the back of the OM for capacities. Should be there.

I’ve been looking in the pdf version in the drivers guide application. There is nothing on capacities in that OM. I’ll look in the paper version to see if it’s different.

you serious? you bought a turbocharged v8 and your excuse for late oil changes is "the environment"? cmon man, think this through, cause you know the more you change the oil the better, then whats the worse? the engine gets scrapped sooner!

so which one is more environmentally friendly? reducing engine life or changing oil more often and disposing of the used oil correctly ?

Such a stupid argument.

It’s 10.5 litres of oil for the m550
I know because that was stated when I got mine changed earlier in the year at the dealership

Just out of interest, what is done with old oil , I know it’s dealt with properly but where does it actually go?

Two posts and you are digging up a two year old thread and coming at someone's comment from two years ago. C'mon man back at you for such a trolling first or second post. Pretty sure he meant kilometers and his environment comment was harmless.

Such a studid reply.

I have changed my oil twice on my 2018 M550iX and the amount that brought it right to the full mark both on the dip stick and Idrive was 10 quarts or about 9.5 liters.

Surprisingly in the USA, most used motor oil that is "reclaimed" is not made into more motor oil, but is filtered and used for industrial uses such as heating, ship fuel or generating electricity (basically we are burning it). I was told, once an oil molecule is used up, you cannot restore it...you can re refine it, blend it with new oil, but will be inferior to virgin refined oil. (not sure if that is a true statement or not)

If anyone is looking for a little DIY oil change info, here is what I have compiled.
(this document assumes you know the basics of an oil change and have done them previously)

BMW M550iX N63TU2 oil change information:

10 quarts LL-01FE, LL-01 or LL-04 oil (LL-01 or LL-04 preferred)
Focus on the approvals, not the viscosity. If have the right approval, the viscosity will be in the appropriate range BMW wants. BMW approvals are more about the HTHS rating than the viscosity (HTHS stands for High Temperature High Shear) LL-01 and LL-04 have a higher HTHS than LL-01FE

BMW oil filter kit # 11427583220 (made by Mahle), Mahle OX3537DECO, Hengst E359HD306 or Mann HU 8007 z
Drain plug bolt torque: 20 NM or 14.75 lb ft
Oil filter cap: Initial torque 30 NM or 22.13 lb ft, release torque through 180 degree counter clockwise/final torque 40 NM or 29.5 lb ft.

Oil Change Light Reset BMW 5 Series Procedure

1. Make sure the hood is closed and the ignition is off.

2. With your foot off the brake pedal, press the START button three times quickly.

3. Wait for Diagnostic Mode Active to be displayed in the cluster.

4. Hold down the BC or RESET button on the left side of the steering column or cluster until the service menu is displayed.

5. Press the same button to scroll through the menu until ENGINE OIL is displayed.

6. Press and hold the same button until the reset is completed.

7. Follow the screen prompts, you may need to press and release the button several times.
