car never seems to turn OFF off
2019 m550
if I walk past it in the garage (no keys in my pocket) it primes the fuel pump and turns on the infotainment screen periodically I'll come home in my other vehicle after the bmw has been parked for hours, and find that it's cycling headlights and tail lights by itself in the garage, infotainment and dashboard on locking the doors seems to settle it down, but I generally don't lock vehicles in the garage. Is this typical behavior? I'd hate to be away for a week and come home to find the thing was blinking it's headlights until the battery ran out. |

Can’t say I’ve ever left the car unlocked for any significant length of time but I would suggest you do lock it .
That as you say should tell the car you’re not about to drive it and it should remain quite. Obviously alarm will be on though. From a security point of view I would also do it aswell You say your keys are not with you but I would also put those in a faraday pouch as an extra precaution (even though they switch off after a few minutes on inactivity) |

I also don't lock the cars in the garage and have noticed some funniness with it not truly being "off", with this car in particular, every now and again. Last service, I was recommended to start thinking about a new battery...I'm thinking maybe I should just lock it now.

I just press the volume knob briefly and that turns off the audio
Idrive remains on until the car is locked unless as previously stated, you hold down the volume knob which will power down idrive 7 |

I read on a different post a few years ago it drains the battery leaving the car unlocked. I always lock the vehicle in the garage since purchase.
I think it was somewhere around 3-5x more drain unlocked vs locked. |

It's a pain in the ass. I have learned to just lock both the M550 and the X5 in the garage. The M550 is much better at "turning off" than the iDrive 7 X5. If you cough near it, it wakes up if unlocked.

Stop then Unbuckle is 100% for me on the radio, etc. shutting down when I open the door.

This happened to me last night. And it might be connected to which driving mode that you are in. I was an Eco pro and when I stopped the car and open the door it didn't turn off like it normally did until I locked the car. Maybe different modes behaved differently? Normally, I am in comfort or sport and in those modes it will turn off as soon as I turn the car off and open the driver side door. Last night, Eco pro I did the same thing and it did not turn off.

Do you have the auto stop enabled? The car response differently if the engine is running when you turn the engine off or not. So if your engine is running stopping the car and opening the driver side door will turn the entire car off, including the radio. if the engine is not running in the auto stop feature has turned the engine off because you’ve come to a complete stop, then you need to use the alarm to lock the car to turn the radio off. So try driving it either in sport mode or turning off the auto start auto stop, and see if that changes things.
