I hear you, but I don't agree. If AMG can make their puny turbo 2.0L 4 banger in the CLA45 sound aggressive, and even get their V6 in the C450 to sound decent, there is no reason BMW couldn't do more with their turbo V8 or inline 6. Heck, even the N/A V8 in the E90 M3 could not hold a candle to the C63 from a sound perspective! I just think it is a lack of effort on BMW's part, and as I said previously, an emotional sound is an important part of driving a high performance car

AWD please!

Autonomous driving features argument out of the way... AWD should be a must for the new G30 M5. It really does not make sense to me that you offer that option on X5/X6 and not extend it to the more dynamic saloon. Yes, I know the gearboxes are different and the engines vary slightly but really the customers hate the fact that these cars offer a solution to the traction issues they suffer in straight line or exiting a corner.

Offer RWD to those purists but don't lock yourself our of a broader market.

Agreed; just gives us the option of AWD.

With the S63 V8 it just isn't possible to get any difference in exhaust note other than volume and slight change in pitch. Each turbo is fed by both banks equally through 360' of firing, meaning the same volume of exhaust gasses are exiting both turbos at the same time. The N63 V8 is a completely different story since it does not have cross bank exhaust manifold. The turbo I-6's are improving at last though nothing will compare to the E46 M3 CSL.

The S65 V8 in the E9x M3 has an unusual firing order for a V8 engine.

Sorry to go off topic and I'm not sure if this has been answered somewhere else already.

But why is the next gen M5 going back to an "F" body? If the next gen 5 series is G30, shouldn't the M5 be a G90? Similar to the new M3/4 being a F8x vs the regular F30 3 series?

Just curious...thanks!

Of course it could, it had a much greater range of tone, loads of induction and screamed at the top end, the c63 sounded flat with a farty exhaust and hardly any induction noise.

I agree! I don't understand the obsession with the C63 (or any other AMG noise). It just doesn't do it for me, its deep and throaty inside the car and I love that, but on the outside it reminds me of a Harley Davidson with a loud exhaust. Not a great sound, the E9X M3 had a fantastic deep, yet sporty and clean sound to it. Miss my E93 with the Eisenmann Race exhaust on it

Interesting to see Yokohama tires, so not just Michelin and Pirelli anymore?
I saw the same Yokohama tires on the new Panamera, so I guess they're good.

I'm sorry but those amg's especially with aftermarket exhaust sound horrible to me, the sound is not pure or clean. Its just loud and obnoxious. I have an eisanman in my M6 and the sound is beyond exotic with the turbo noise through the pipes. And not really loud

I have to agree re: AMG

Much better exhaust note. My E63 wagon sounds like a monster. No fake sound either...

Wasn't the E28 M5 the heaviest most luxurious and equipment laden 5 series you could buy at the time?

I don't remember it being a stripped out racer?

Updated July 25, 2016 with photos previewing front end styling

The F90 M5 prototype has dropped its front end plastic camouflage in favor of a cloth covering. And while the cloth covering still covers the entire front end, its soft shape allows us to make out the front end styling and lines. What we can definitely make out is that the next gen M5 with its massive front air intakes will be much more aggressively styled than the current model.

I always liked that the M5 did not overdo it in the styling department. It sure seems to sell to a very different crowd than the rather loud M2/3/4s of the last generations. I know this already changed a little with the F10 M5, but this seems almost Cadillac like in its loudness.

is the tailpipe placement on mules indicative of the production location? The close twin pipes are synonymous with ///Ms, I hope they don't deviate from this.
