ASD Retrofit on a 540

This is not going to be a popular opinion but I was wondering if we can retrofit an active sound design for a 540. I know the 550 has one and I think the 530 as well. I've heard that the asd is not bad on those models so I want to see if this is possible. For me fake sound is still a little bit better than no sound. Please don't hate guys, to each his own. I'm just trying to find out if this is possible and what are the things needed to complete this. (Don't know if some type of coding is needed). Thanks.

No hate here, I like ASD and I could care less if it's fake. It helps with the rush you get when you step on the gas hard.

I may be mistaken, but doesn't the 540 have ASD standard?

I thought it had something with ASD? It becomes very noticable when in sports mode and accelerating a decent pace.

No it's not. It is not available for the 540 which is why I'm asking. Confirmed that it didn't have it by asking different people and the fact that it doesn't show up In BimmerCode.

Got it, saw a few Facebook post on this subject this morning. Guessing one is from you.

I have a 2018 540 and also don't have ASD. I feel like the engine noise is pretty good. But I'm sure it's all relative to what you're used to/what you're looking for.

I have seen some YT videos on it with it off and on. It's an option in Bimmercode Simple Mode to enable or disable. I was tempted to turn is off and on to see what it does, but I will leave well enough alone.

Turn it off and go for a drive Joe. You will be amazed how much different it sounds. After I got my car software updated, it defaulted back to ASD "on".
When I was driving home from the dealership, i was lke......man did that software open up the exhaust more ? Then I realized what it was.

With windows up and in Comfort mode, you cant even hear the exhaust at all w ASD off.

I bet your exhaust not alone sounds great without ASD.

Confirming ASD is not there on 2018 540i. Just fired up BimmerCode (Simple mode) and I don't see any option to configure it. Wish it was available on my car as the exhaust noise is fairly quiet, even in sport mode with stock exhaust.

You could just get an upgraded exhaust

There are many options if you have an M Sport model. Remus retains the flaps that will close in Comfort and open in Sport.

If you have non M Sport, like me (rare on here, it seems), then the Dinan will work but you do lose the flaps. So open all the time. But apparently it's not a big enough change to be too much in daily driving. I want to do it, but trying to do as much due diligence as possible.

I'll check it out, but some of your observations seem to be the reason I want it on!

Its pretty dramatic, but I like it off to hear the real V8 exhaust versus what is piped in. Your car with that Dinan should sound awesome.

I'm certain you will notice a difference. If you hate it, another 5 mins and its back
Another bonus is your B & W sound system will not be interfered with. Pure music versus a mix of exhaust and music.

Good point. I'll mess with it this weekend

I bought a Dinan exhaust and just waiting for it to be delivered. ASD would just add a little bit of a cabin noice that I'm looking for. I hope this retrofit is possible.

Please keep us posted when you get the exhaust. YouTube can tell me how it sounds when it's rev'd up like crazy. I'd love to hear a review of how the axle back sounds on a 540 under normal, every day driving.

I'm hoping to do it late in the year, though backorder times could affect that. Hopefully you will get yours in soon and can provide some feedback!

Will do. I went with the Dinan because I need it to be tamer as I live in Cali. Was told Dinan is the way to go.

I have heard the same. I'm not in Cali, but it's my daily driver and needs to not be obnoxious at the office and at school pick up. I'm excited to hear your reviews for sure.

Went into Bimmercode to turn it off and it appears you can't turn it back on without a restore?

Not sure about that Joe. I'm going to code mine off today and will let you know if it can be turned back on.

Yeah, just don't know if I feel like restoring a back up for this today. Another day. There's always a chance a restore can turn into hours of troubleshooting.

I seen that before. I reached out to the developer and guided me how to turn it back on using expert mode.

I have ProTool which I prefer. I was just at the gym and had my iPhone and always have my adapter.

I'll fire up the android tablet and see what ProTool says.
