The 550 off the line is a beast.
Was able to beat the crap out of one with 30 miles on the odometer during an M Track Days event and the thing is a bullet off the line.

Fun but silly. Apples vs Oranges comparison and we all know it. Either give the F10 AWD or the M550i RWD.
The F10 still shines in the area where it was meant to, on the track even though it makes a terrible track car. The F90 M5 will be faster in all areas, but still I can't even imagine that controlling a ZF8 will be any fun compared to a DCT or 6MT in the F10. Then there's the fact that owners will be listening to the same exact exhaust note as the F10. Where's the excitement in that? There will just be no drama with the F90. It will truly be a 4-door Nissan GTR. No thanks. Lol!

It takes skill to launch 550-600hp on two wheels. AWD, not so much...
My x5M will beat anything in my stable off the line in the real world, even though on paper, it’s a different story. (Recognizing one could set up launch control etc)

What a horrible camera angle for the lap comparison!
It will be interesting to see how the M5 works with the AWD split. Hopefully it will eliminate all understeer.

As always, a part of the story missing to show some sort of false AWD superiority in all cases... please provide the trap speed (speed of the vehicle as it crosses the line)... I think there will be some shocked faces when everyone realizes what a 100Hp difference means.
Let's just go ahead and forget that the ring leader is a RWD car and the world's fastest dragsters are also rwd... but yeah... |

Would like to see from a roll, to see exactly what the power difference is. Or on a properly prepped sticky dragstrip.
The F10 could have been spinning through 1st and 2nd for all we know. But I guess that is the point of awd, consistent launches. |

Video fails on many fronts. Biggest fail is the music.

Having driven the F10 M5, I can say that it must have been spinning its wheels as some point when taking off where the G30 just dug in. A roll will be TOTALLY different. 100HP is a 100HP. Its not like the M550 now all of a sudden has the weight of a 230i with a TTV8!! no magic except AWD

Can't hear the engines. Shit music. Only one drag race from a dig. No roll race. No trap speeds. At least there's a video showing the M5 being quicker around a track.
Would love to see this comparison properly done by someone who actually knows what they're doing. |

Many ways to race these cars (dig, roll, etc.) but they only presented two. Doesn't mean the two they chose are not legit, just means they only picked these two races. Like others have said, from a roll the M550i would be smoked. That's what happens when this type of HP takes over. It's nice to see more than write ups on how the M550i is the quickest 5-series ever. BMW made the claim and knew videos like this would test the claimed figures -- so I'm not too surprised by the drag race.
By the way, this says nothing negative about last generation's F10 M5. New generation cars are supposed to be better and the AWD technology + lighter body makes the M550i a nice improvement. Put the 2018 M5 against either of these cars and the gap will be massive. Might we have this same conversation for the next gen M340i xdrive and the current gen F80 M3? |
