Warranty Reimbursement from BMW?

I had some work done yesterday by my local BMW independent shop that would have been covered under warranty. It was worked performed under a technical service bulletin. My dealer was unresponsive in getting me an appointment and I just wanted the issue resolved, so I paid the $130 for parts and $170 for labor, $300 total.

Has anyone had any experience getting BMW to reimburse? I know it is a long shot, but since there was an actual TSB out and a known issue, I am thinking maybe they will give me something back. Going to call BMW NA later this morning, but wondering if anyone has had any experience with this?

Thanks,

Joe

It seems like a stretch to get reimbursement from BMW on the work. Probably worth a try though to see how they respond. My guess is that it will be a negative.

That would be my guess as well. I think the only time they will reimburse is for a recall and the work was done before the recall announcement.

Was it before or after the TSB was released that the work was performed?

Usually OEMs pay for fixes performed in the period before the warrantied fix is available. As they’re less excited to pay labor rates they didn’t negotiate.

I hope OP has other dealers available. Really shitty service to not even be able to get them to give you an appointment.

I do, I must have 6 dealers within 20 miles or less. But I like my dealer and I like my indie. Full disclosure I was impatient. If they don't reimburse and probably won't. It's only $300 bucks.

TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins) aren't usually covered by the warranty.

They usually specify warranty as the way they are covered and paid. Usually they no longer apply once the warranty is up. Based on the various BMW ones I’ve read over the last few years for my G30.

Rarely they offer warranty extensions themselves that offer coverage on its own. Such as the active grill shutter TSB.

Closing the loop:

BMW NA: "Since you had the work done by an independent dealership, we can't help you"

Exact words.

Not surprised.

Unfortunately you jumped the gun (For justified reasons) and now they are washing their hands as you skipped over them to get the repair done.

Learning lesson perhaps? Time to change a more accommodating dealer if at all possible?

Yeah, I knew going into it I would be out the $300 bucks. I'm pretty picky about dealers and for me it is more about the service advisor. Hell, once they take the car from the service bay at drop off, we don't know shit about what is going on back there at any dealer.

My service advisor of 19 years did get back to me a day and a half later on an appointment, but at that point, I had already had my indy BMW shop order the parts. My service advisor at this dealer has been good to me and she said she was swamped and short handed and apologized. She's smokin hot too which helps with the loyalty
