Ride Comfort Comparison

Hey Guys!

Long time no chat - I’ve mostly been over on the g05 forum occasionally popping over here. Parts of my m550 I certainly miss lol. One of which, it was very comfortable. I think probably more comfortable than other m-lite cars like the m50 and m40. Am I remember this wrong? I’ve posted this on the g05 forum and curious to gather thoughts here too.

I know this has been discussed many many many times in various head to head comparisons but maybe not all these setups in one thread.

Can people who’ve experienced all of these cars rank the stiffness of suspensions 1-10? For purpose of comparison let’s assume stock wheels and AS run flats as well as no air suspension or DHP.

Thank you so much.

1) 22-24 x3 m40
2) 21-23 x5 40 m sport
3) 21-23 x5 40 x line
4) 21-23 x5 m50 (base suspension)
5) 21-23 540 m sport
6) 21-23 m550

Never driven the X series (SUVs are not my bag), but the two 5ers are more or less the same if you are comparing M adaptive with 704 passive. Sporty but with "Restkomfort."

I would not be surprised if the sportier X models are stiffer in some formats, as they would have to be in order to control the weight and offset the disadvantageous ride height.

Makes sense. Understand the suv logic. The x5 doesn’t handle like a 540 so not it’s not guaranteed to be stiffer.

It will likely be stiffer in sport trim. There is no other way to get it to get out of its own way.

which wheels size did you have for the m550i? what do you have now on the x5?

I have my '18 m550i 19" non-runflat winter and 20" runflat summer. Our '24 X5 got 22" non-runflat. The X5, with plenty of suspension travel being an SUV, handles bumps really well. I'm in Manhattan almost every other week so I'm very familiar with the condition of the roads there.

Stiffness wise, I feel less bumps in the X5 than the m550i in either setup.

Very helpful - thank you.
Had the stock 19in with AS non-flats on the m550. That’s good to know that even a 22in wheel on an x5 you found more comfortable- would not have thought that

Can’t really help since I’ve never had the 704 suspension. 540 Luxury Line and M550 with DHP.

But it wouldn’t surprise me. SUV’s tend to have stiffer suspension anyway. Our X7 rides great but in some ways my M550 rides better. But again, DHP.
