First Video of a 2018 BMW M550ix in the 1/4 - 12.3@115 MPH
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I wanted to see how the new M550ix would do. I guessed fairly correctly thinking mid 12's or better. The car was super consistent running within a hundredth of a second in three passes (and tenths of a MPH). The day was hot and humid, and there was 3/4's of a tank of fuel. One thing to mention - either there is an issue with the trans, or the car is tuned this way with purpose; 1-2 and 2-3 shift pull hard and then right before redline drop power (pulling you forward almost) and then shifts. 3-4 shift and beyond does not do this. Personally, I believe this to be intentional, and if tuned out the car, it will be much quicker and faster - forget about adding boost. I would say 12.0's to 11.9's just but making it shift crisply and with full power to redline. I am quite impressed with the performance - for a non M5 luxury car. Impressive results for a 4 door sedan
DSC ON and OFF and Traction Control Settings could have made a difference in timing sheet as well. Not too much but just

I actually tested both. 12.3 to 12.7 just by using launch control. I had DSC off, traction control off, S+, sport shift, launch control, and auto shifted.

Certainly a quick car, but Is it all that impressive?
As a point of comparison I've done 12.8@108mph in a 335d remapped to 360bhp. I'd have thought this would have been quite a bit quicker than that. Makes me feel less annoyed that they aren't going to sell them in the UK though.

My car has 360bhp and weights about 1.75 tonnes, so about 205bhp per tonne, though I suppose my car has more torque per tonne... Both have xdrive, so traction will be much the same. Maybe you guys are right, I just expected that with that many extra horses it would translate in to a much much quicker car. There are other guys in the UK with similar cars to me going even quicker! E92 M3's were slower than my car to the 1/4 mile marker, but mainly due to traction issues, their terminal velocities were around the 120mph mark, so I suppose I thought that this car would have my traction but their power and even more torque, so comfortably go below 12s. Though I accept an E92 M3 is much lighter than a 5 series!

Pretty impressive for a luxury sedan. I don't think I will ever take my M550i to track, but it's good to know its potential

This car is fast from 0-60 due to x-drive but not so much at the quarter mile. F10 M5 will smoke it beyond the 0-60 where they are neck and neck. The new M5 will be a real beast with 600 HP and X-Drive.

Yeah But This....
12.3 is bad actually guys. Maybe when the engine is even more broken in. 12 is more accurate and I'm sure the OP was having a bad day (Technically).
This Audi below hit 12.2 and its not the RS6 which is the M5 competitor |

I knew the car was quicker than the outgoing M5 to 60 MPH - but I was pleasantly surprised it was as solid as it was in the 1/4. And although I have no plans to tune or mod this car (I am fortunate to have alternatives there) - someone will and they will easily run mid to low 11's - maybe even high 10's at 125+ with a tune and downpipes. |

In fact, I would say the M550ix would win because of its AWD advantage 8/10 times against most drivers (especially at a track where stock tires go to spin). The mere fact we are discussing both in the same sentence is crazy as the M550ix is a luxury car. |

Now if you have experience racing - you would know that MPH is the cars potential. Exactly what I ran with the M550ix. And a 12.3. The S6 IS the competitor to the M550ix. This isn't the new M5. My car was driven with a .025 reaction time in auto using launch control. So there isn't much technically remaining - besides the fact the DA was high because it was super hot and humid, I had 3/4 tank of fuel and 42 psi in my tires. Beyond that - you're right on the money. |
