That's easy...

Once your friends are all liquified you can tell them as you drive away from the bar.

That turbo 4 that they have in there now is NOWHERE NEAR enough for that car. I can't imagine how a 3 cylinder is gonna work.

That M5 sounds intriguing. Maybe that can be a 4-door addition to my M family in a couple of years.

E60 production ran from March 2003 till late 2009. F10 will have run from late 2009 until early 2016.

Six and a half years for both.

the current F10 is already a great looking car, what a challenge to make the G30 even better.

So if the 3 and 5 are on the same platform then they'll virtually be the same size...is that right? And with a 3 cylinder you're going to have so much extra room under the hood you could put a second trunk in the front haha.

They can make mad power from it, and still be efficient in the process.

Just needs strong internals and it can make as much power if not more than it's 4c brethren.

They can add and delete from the modular aspect of said platform.

So size is adjustable as is wheel base and interior/exterior dimensions.

Logic would say that depends on the success of the current 2 series... If it sells like hot cakes and gets rave reviews it would be bonkers to move it to FWD.

Anyone of us can work that out, let's hope BMW use logic and reason when the next 2er is developed!

BMW manufacturing their own CFRP is looking more and more like a great acquisition. Audi has VAG to help keep costs down, BMW has nothing close to that. So now they're going to platform share internally which would be a problem if the didn't have their own CFRP to play with. Size will still be something BMW will need to figure out but at least they can control the weight factor without increasing costs.

It's easy to look at other manufacturers and ask why BMW can't or isn't doing that, but forget they're independent which is a challenge in itself. It's definitely a slow process but in a few years when BMW has economies of scale, we might start to see the "old" BMW again.

Glad to hear a new generation is on the way...As someone who's owned E39 540 and E60 550 I've always had a love affair with the 5 series..And a certain fondness for 8 cylinders too

The F'10 never did anything to get my corpuscle's jumping though. I felt it's gotten too big, too bloated and has strayed from a true drivers reward of a car.

I know comparo's are for selling magazines, but I agree with many of the recent ones that conclude that in this class of automobile, the competition has not just closed the gap to BMW in key driving attributes, but has outright surpassed them.

Here's hoping they get some mojo back with the G generation

No hood cut line for the next platform or is that just because it is a render?

The comments noted a reduction of as much as 400lb. That will go a long way to reducing the dependence on 300lb-ft to get the thing moving.

Just but a stronger motor if that's what floats your boat.

Getting rid of 400lbs will probably help a bit.

Edit: ns2000x beat me to it.

It used to be that one would brag about how many Cylinders one has.. with more being better.. but now.. less is more. perhaps the owner of the new 5er will be the envy of all there, as he has the lowest Cylinder Index.. ?

So are you saying people can't brag about fuel economy? or... apparently.. fiscal responsibility... or that being green isn't " cool" ? or " fun"?

I guess it's time to go back to high school... because that's when things were " fun".

The render seems too close to the current F10 to be believed... Like an F10 with an F30 nose on it. Granted the F10 is the best selling 5 to date, so they may go light on revisions. I personally think the F10 is the best looking 5 to date, and one of the all time best looking BMWs period.

If you're waiting for the G30 M5, it'll still be a year or two after this platform launches if BMW holds true to their M release schedules. So you're talking potentially 4 or more years away.

As for the 3 banger, I'm not a fan. Power is one thing... They're squeezing more power out of less cylinders... fine. But these 3 and 4 banger engines have nowhere near the silky smooth delivery of the 6 and 8 engines. They're rough around the edges and more punchy than smooth in delivery. It's starting to sound like there's a snow blower under the hood. On cars that cost $60k+ once decently optioned, this just doesn't do it for me. I'll stick with my turbo V8, pay a few more bucks for gas, but drive an ACTUAL "ultimate driving machine" versus something that feels like it had the fun squeezed out of it after undergoing surgery by the US congress!

Precisely! Who cares about money, the environment, etc.?!! I want a damned V10 ///M5 with a dual-clutch transmission and absolutely nothing to make it get anymore than 18mpg!!!!!! LOL.

Now that I've gotten the asshole side of me out, I think this new 5er does look good but I can't be bothered with a car with only three cylinders. I need NA six or twin turbo four at a minimum.
