G30 2018 540i Cluster issue

Hi all,

Anyone else experiencing the instrument cluster not loading?
Bought the car 3 months back and all of a sudden its temperamental and not loading some mornings or afternoons whenever I finish work, resulting in me driving home with no knowledge on how fast, what fuel, or any info on the car..

Wondering if this is a common issue or if anyone knows a fix?

Checked fuses, reset iDrive, Disconnected battery. No fix, except it will come on and off whenever it feels like it ..

Thanks

It may be useful to know if it's the full digital one or the base cluster

I've got the full digital cluster but no issue so far. Car is 5 years old.

Another item I would have avoided if I could have. It's another one of those unneeded tech-dork things that I know is going to go much earlier than it should.

The touchscreen climate will probably go right after that.

Progress

Well, you tried the obvious things. The next step would be to check for error codes via the OBD port.

Yes OBD provided no codes , though I do have a few faulty PDC sensors which are going to be looked at by BMW. Would this have an affect on the cluster? I wouldn’t have thought so but worth asking

I don't see this as being common at all so consider it an isolated issue you should have checked by the dealer or a qualified shop.

Mine has the full digital cluster too, a 2017 540i. No issues with it.

I would consider changing the 12v batteries or at least charging them up with a Ctek or Victron charger.

A low voltage battery may still start the car but can cause odd electrical faults.

Even something as simple as the lvds cable being faulty or not fully plugged in is worth checking.

Thanks. Do you know if the car needs recoded or anything for a change of battery or if it’s a simple swap and replace? The car is 2018 so I wouldn’t have thought so but again the cluster shouldn’t have any issues at that age.

No recoding or anything. The CTEK 5.0 can "repair" your battery cells if there are errors inside.
This is the one you need.

Update: BMW technician is being sent out to the house to see if they can resolve the issue before it being lifted to local dealer.
Booked in for 2 weeks time but if you get the car towed to the dealer, they can look at it sooner.

They had ran some diagnostic check and stated its a low voltage issue to the cluster.

Just ignore him. His lack of contribution is not indicative of the culture here.

I can’t say I’ve seen this issue on the full digital display I’ve seen many people post anomalies which usually were the content not lining up, but a restart usually corrected it. Going completely dark sounds like a display issue or a loose ribbon cable.

Are you under warranty?

You could try pulling the negative battery cable for 30 minutes. This will give the car a hard reboot.

Edit - I missed your last post. Good you are under warranty. It’s a great cluster. Most cars have it and the folks that don’t, want it or retrofit it.

Thanks Joe for your reply.

Unfortunately I have already carried this out with no joy.

Apparently the dealer has ran a diagnostic check from their end to the car and have found a low voltage to the cluster.
They are sending a technician out to see if he can sort it before it being towed to the dealer.

Got it, I missed your last post on my reply and edited it, but you were too quick for me.

Sounds like you are under warranty. It sucks going without these bad boys though, I get that, hopefully they give you a nice loaner.
