SR-71 story from a pilot:

We completed our pass over Beirut and turned toward Malta, when I got a warning low-oil-pressure light on my right engine. Even though the engine was running fine I slowed down and lowered our altitude and made a direct line for England. We decided to cross France without clearance instead of going the roundabout way. ‘We made it almost across, when I looked out the left window and saw a French Mirage III sitting ten feet off my left wing. He came up on our frequency and asked us for our Diplomatic Clearance Number. I had no idea what he was talking about, so I told him to stand by. I ask my backseater, who said, “Don’t worry about it. I just gave it to him.” What he had given him was “the bird” with his middle finger: I lit the afterburners and left that Mirage standing still. Two minutes later, we were crossing the Channel.’

I'd love to see what we have flying around now. Certainly something many times faster than the SR 71.
One of the coolest things I saw before I retired in 2012, was a mocked up cockpit of the F-35. There are tiny cameras all over the fuselage that are directly tied into the pilots helmet that has a type of VR goggles incorporated into it. You can literally look directly through the floor, sides, rear, etc. It was nuts to experience it.

Hahaha...........yea there's tons of stories like that. I remember us flying into Naval Bases a few times. ATC always asks the rank of the Pilot. Without thinking, our guys who are usually an O3 (Captain) replied back. In the Navy, a Captain is an O6, which is just below where Generals start. One place we landed at literally rolled a red carpet at the acft front door. LOL

I heard a really good one from a "brave" chAir Force controller at HIF. He sent around an aircraft carrying some General; there was traffic on the runway so landing wasn't an option. . The pilot said they General so-and-so-so onboard and had no intention of going around. The controller said to "go around and take the General with you!"

We got a call from base ops at HIF "telling" us that when Often51 gets here he was #1 (another General onboard). Our sup told them that when he's at the fence he's #1, but until then he was ours. The dude at HIF said that we didn't understand, general so-and-so was onboard so he's #1. Our sup told him that HE didn't understand, "I don't work for you!" and, again, he's #1 at the fence!

Sometimes nice cars park next to nice cars because they trust the owner. I know if I have to park next to someone, I ain't parking next to the 1990 Mercury Marquis with the old couple behind the wheel. I will park next to another higher end car that looks like the owner cares about it, preferably another bimmer with an M package.

A nearby neighbor has (had?) a GT3 Touring, I haven't seen him around recently, I only met him once, that was pre-pandemic. Probably back when you could only get them with the girlie transmission?

My two-doors-up neighbor who recently bought (ordered) a G80 M3 also traded his McLaren for another 911, but I'm not sure which one, as he's never around and it's so freakin' hot here these days, I'm not stepping outside unless I know he's going to be there.

I liked the McLaren (620 I believe) but he sold it before the warranty ran out. He typically buys used and I think just trades into the dealer, but still seems to do OK with them, financially. But with Ferraris and McLarens and the like, the used market is still strong.

The dude has like 5 cars and here I am with just one.

I really like the GT3T, probably because I don't like the wing. There were so many comments in that action that the car "wasn't a real GT3 without the wing". Made me laugh. It is not a realt GT3, it's a GT3T.

All that said, I'll take a blinged out 992 Turbo over the GT3.

My buddy has a 1983-ish 911 cabriolet that he bought in/around 2005 and paid too much for it ($14K or so) at the time. It is old, it is slow, it creaks on bumps, it handles like crap, the shifter came out of a Mack truck and simply will not go into gear when it's cold (pre-G50) and did I mention that it's slow? He could sell it today for over $50K. I keep telling him to put it on BaT but he's old and lazy and although he wants to sell it and buy a 981 Boxster, something that he can actually take on long trips and that his wife can drive (although I don't know why that's a concern, as she'll just curb all the wheels...) he just can't part with it.

He drives it maybe 1000 miles a year. Probably less. It only caught on fire once.

Hey, I've owned 911s, the best (with the most character) was a 964 and I wish that I still had it, largely because of how it's appreciated, not that it was a great driving experience. But it had great sounds and those stupid pedals that came up out of the floor and just loads of character. But there's no way that they are worth the money that they are getting. More so the 993. Gads those people are crazy.

Just gone online to pay the VED (road tax) on the G31 expecting it to be at the lower rate as the G31 is now over five years old, of what I thought would be £150 or so, only to discover that it’ll actually cost me £407.50 as the higher rate is for five years from the second time the vehicle is taxed, when I looked up the rates my brain only registered five years….Grrr!!

From what I’ve posted below, if I’m reading it correctly it seems that I’ll also be paying the higher rate next Bloody August as well with mine being a 2018

You have to pay an extra £390 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000. You do not have to pay this if you have a zero emission vehicle.

You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is
