First mods to my 2018 M550i...window tint.

Well I guess technically the first mod was removing the front license plate..lol..Just got my car tinted. I went with ceramic 35% on the sides, rear and sunroof. It was more about blocking the heat than it was to darken the car. My last car was 50% and at night I felt that was a tad too dark. This one is a little lighter and let's see how I feel about it. At first I thought too light because I was used to the 50% on the old car, but it's growing on me. Next up, gloss black mirrors, grill, side vents and rear badges, then maybe some springs.

The first picture looks like you're tinting the deck lid

When you say 50% was sometimes too dark, did you intend to go darker with 35% but it ended up being lighter? Was that because the new tint was measured in light blocked (i.e. 35% blocked = 65% VLT)?

Yes I guess the new tint is light blocked. No I wanted lighter than 50%.

The lower the percentage on tint, the darker it is. I am not following your 50% to 35% change because the 50% was too dark? 50% would probably be lighter than factory glass tint.

Looks good though. Tint is the only thing I haven't done. 35% is the law here and I have done it before and it's not worth it in terms of "look" which is all I care about. Going darker will be a PIA at inspection time and may also fuck up the night/day sensor, making the dash dim in the daytime.

I have 50% on my windshield (wife has sun sensitivity problems) with an 8" strip of limo tint at the top. I've noticed no issues with any of the sensors; the tint goes around the sensors at the mirror.

There are more sensors than those. Many people with the night dim issue in the day haven't done anything to the windshield, so that's how I know that it's not all about the windshield. Pretty sure some sensors are inside the dar on the mirror. All that said, 50% really isn't an issue, it is more with tint under 30%.

I did code the light sensitivity to minimum...

Ceramic tint keeps the inside cooler. Having a car with ceramic tint, then getting in a car without it is really obvious. From a comfort standpoint it's a huge improvement. Thats why I did the sunroof. Let in sun, not heat on my head. No issues with dash dimming during the day.

Understood, especially if you daily drive it and live in a hot place. I do nether, so repelling heat isn’t my top priority. I do like the look of a tinted car and how it improves the lines, that’s why I have procrastinated over doing it for 4 years 😂.

Ideally to make it worth it for me I’d like to go below 35% as 35% just isn’t a game changer in terms of looks. I don’t want to deal with passing inspection annually and Murphy’s Law would probably fall on me and I’d have sensor issues.

Maybe someday. It’s short money.
