Hello.
So I’ve bought an M-Perfomance spoiler (picture underneath) and with it I ordered the 3M VHB 5952F tape, which I saw recommended on here. Do I need anything else or is the tape sufficent? I’m asking since i’m planing to go on a road trip through Germany, I wonderer if there was any risk of it flying off?
I highly doubt it, but its better to ask, than to risk the spoiler flying through someones windshield at 250km/h.

This is how I did it.

1. Use a good, non-damaging degreaser. I used Simple Green because I had it around.
2. Wipe off SG with mild soapy water. This is probably unnecessary but I only wanted to do this one time. So, one extra wipe down isn't going to hurt anything.
3. Wipe it down with alcohol on microfiber.
4. Apply good pressure when attaching the spoiler. That tape is pressure activated. Weight it down, if possible. Though, I didn't.
5. Let it sit in dry warmish area for as close to 24 hrs as possible. Overnight is fine, though.

You shouldn't have any issues.

I've seen posts where people used copious amounts of painter's tape to hold the spoiler down while the adhesive cures.

My issue with that is if you're attaching a spoiler with a large lip you're mostly going to be pulling down on the back edge of the lip, causing it to want to lift on the front edge of the lip. You're just not going to get enough pull down Force from the tape on the front edge because it's in the same plane as the spoiler. For really short spoilers it's probably fine though.

I would use 3M adhesion promoter on the spoiler side and probably some heat gun when applying to the car. To degrease the car, you can use a 10% alcohol mix.

That is the M5 "Pro" spoiler which sits on the facing edge of the trunk. The recommended install instructions say to use betalink, which is a permanent adhesive. You can try 3M automotive tape, but you may lose it because of where and how it sits. When I was looking for my spoiler, I could not decide between the CS or the Pro. I ended up going with the CS because the Pro required betalink and I was not willing to permanently attach.

I just used 3m tape on mine and I've been over 100+ several times and it has yet to fly off.

Which one you got?

When I attached the tall M Performance deck spoiler to my F30, I used 3M VHB 6397 tape for body trim. My application process was as follows...

1. Dry mount the spoiler (no tape) in desired location and mark the surrounding area with painters tape right to the edge of the spoiler
2. use alcohol wipes to thoroughly clean the mounting location and allow to dry
3. use 3M adhesion promoter on the paint surface and allow to dry
4. peel back an edge of the VHB tape (about 1" max) and turn/lay it 90 degrees so it's exposed from the spoiler to the back of the car. Do this for each strip of tape you will have to remove.
5. Without removing the tape film, mount the spoiler in the desired location making sure the tab of film is peeking out so you can pull/remove it. With the spoiler in position, begin to pull the tape film out/off and press down on the spoiler where you just removed the film. Continue until all film has been removed from the tape. Apply pressure evenly along the length of the spoiler for a couple minutes. The film is pretty strong and you should be able to pull it off in one strip.
6. 3M states "At room temperature, approximately 50% of the ultimate strength will be achieved after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours and 100% after 72 hours."

If you're not applying it at ~70F ambient then a hair dryer or heat gun should be used to bring the trunk mounting surface and VHB up to temperature.

Never had an issue with that spoiler...it was on quite firmly and never moved at speed. As Joe-BMW33 pointed out, the spoiler you chose requires betalink, which I wouldn't want to use again. I used that stuff 35 years ago on a GTI spoiler and it was a PITA.

I also have the M Performance CF trunklid spoiler and simply used 3M VHB tape. It is very strong and I have had no issues. I cleaned both mating surfaces with isopropyl alcohol first. VHB tape is used by car manufacturers for holding spoilers, fender extensions, and window trim for decades. If properly applied, it is not going to let go.

My buddy and I spent four times as much time and effort getting the old spoiler off, then cleaning and prepping the surface to attach the new one. The old spoiler was attached with VHB as well and it was a pain to remove. Its very sticky, tacky stuff.

The other thing that appealed to me about the CS was that it goes in the same place as the OEM. I just knew that taking the old adhesive off was going to be a bitch and it was, until I ran out and bought the 3M wheel. The area definitely got burned a little with the wheel, probably nothing you would see on white, but definitely on Carbon Black. It was comforting that I was going over it.

But agreed, after getting all that experience with removing, cleaning and reapplying the 3M adhesive, I’d agree neither the Pro or CS is going anywhere.

As mentioned above, use the 3M Adhesion promotor with the tape. All will be rock solid!
