They are both shortened words that aren't really words to begin with, so if you want to be the grammar police, both are just slang (for independent mechanic). But yeah, I get it, indie rock band.

Exactly...when I see indie I think of indie rock band, so I prefer indy (which really doesn't make me think of Indianapolis).

I gotta thank you guys, I was totally unaware of this value service menu that the dealer provides.
For reference, here are some prices I got for my 2018 M550 in the DC/Baltimore area of Maryland: Cabin filter: 101.99 Spark plugs: 321.99 Engine air filter: 121.99 Oil change: 129.99 Wiper blades: 74.99 They have some brake pads/rotors options too. Did not have a coolant flush on this menu unfortunately. But I was mostly interested in this spark plug service. I watched several videos to DIY it but kept pushing it off. I'm at 69k now. |

Damnnit. So two things I've noticed ever since I got the car back from the Indy/indie shop that replaced my wastegate.
1.) My fan stays on after the car is off every single time now...even if I turn the car on and off within 3 minutes. I don't remember it doing this before. Funny story this morning, this lady shook her head at me and likely cursed me out under her breath (I heard her mumbling to herself) because she thought my car was on while I was filling gas behind her, really it was just the fan. I didn't realize wtf she was grumbling about until she got into her car and sped off. Haha. 2.) The car idles at just under 7000 RPM. I don't remember if I was higher before but I feel like it was a tiny bit higher. Also, sometimes I get this sensation of the car starting to stall but it never does. It just gives me that slightly vibration like it's thinking about it but doesn't. Usually right after a cold start and if I ever stop at a light, it's like a second or two then it's back to normal. It's getting me nervous that the something else is going on now, as the shop suggested and wanted another diagnostic for before they did whatever that reset they claim they did. I've been reading online and maybe it's the spark plugs, possibly even a coil pack or two...or worse, something if screwed up with the fuel injectors. I'm going to schedule my spark plug replacement for next week. I'm really hoping it'll go away after that but I'm just nervous 😭 |

If you had a bad plug or coil pack it would misfire and you with get a CEL. Even a slight misfire you barely felt would throw a CEL. Could be related to the thermostat if that. There is a warranty on the thermostat for 15 years, they know it’s faulty. Surely you meant 700rpm and not 7,000. That would be a crazy idle.

I'll see if I can have the dealer look at the thermostat when I get the plugs changed.
No clue what's going on with the 2nd issue. Maybe I'll ask them to check that out too. Haha yeah 700 RPM, def not 7000, LOL! But I'm fairly certain it was above 700 before and now it's just under 700. Can any of you guys with m550s confirm what your idle is? |

Finally got my spark plugs changed ($325.99) and did the coolant flush ($250). Total $624 after $35 of whatever "shop fees" are. Not a bad price from the dealer overall. My car isn't doing that strange stutter thing, which makes me think 1 or a few of my plugs were bad. I did get a misfire error last week that came and went but it hasn't felt like the beginning stages of a stall like it was before the plugs were replaced. I asked them to check my fan coming on more than normal but they didn't find anything wrong with the fan or thermostat...so who knows?!
They sent me this nice video of everything they checked under the car but I do however need to change my rear guibo disc ($1700), which I'm HOPING is covered under the rt 66 warranty and the front thrust rod bushings ($2300). Im not sure what this is but I know it's suspension related and get the feeling rt 66 will not cover this one. SA will be calling them later today to see if they'll cover any of the two. |

Keep us posted on the Route 66 coverage. It is and was my understanding when I pulled the trigger was that suspension components are covered like arms and bushings. You should he good there. The flex disk could go either way, I think I remember someone saying they didn't cover it and someone saying they did. Either way, a lot of us 66'ers are curious. On the misfire/hesitation - did the dealer mention coils at all?

I was actually waiting for the dealer to say something about coils but they thought they were good enough to reuse. I even had it in my head budgeted for 2-3 new coil packs. Recommends coils around 100k miles unless there's an issue. Not sure if they were any cleaning of the coils they did (if they can even do that). |

$250/hr is BMW of Catonsville. I ended up taking it to BMW of Silver Spring this time, because they had the value service on the plugs...Catonsville did not. I'd assume it's close to that here as well since they're only like 20ish mins away from one another.

I think with Route66 the SA at the dealer has to use the right wording to get some stuff covered. Look forward to hearing more.

Agreed. However, for this particular instance I'm unsure if the SA forgot or hadn't gotten a chance to yet...I hadn't heard back from her by 2pm today, so I just called rt.66 myself and told them I "know" these two items are covered, but I just want to make sure. They started a claim inquiry or something and confirmed it was covered. I tried to get pricing coverage out of them but couldn't because I didn't have the actual part numbers. I then called the SA and left her a voicemail and she called me back an hr or so later saying she spoke with rt 66 and an inspector needs to come out.
