Nah, as much as my X5 is so much more comfortable than my M550, I just don't get the SUV thing unless you need to haul kids or wood.

Knees and back. People like my parents don’t shop sedans anymore, they look for small SUV’s because they can get in and out.

Great write-up NGT2 .
I’ve said the same about the E60, it doesn’t quite fit in the 5 lineup and looks like the odd one out. The design language and even the shape of the F10 more closely resemble the E39. The G30 looks like a natural successor to the F10. Bangle took a risk with the E60, but then backtracked and went more conservative. BMW is in a phase where they’re experimenting and shaking things up…a phase that could be short lived as well.

Would help if Americans would get a smaller instead of fatter. Maybe they wouldn’t see an advantage in everything being bigger and bigger.

It also makes some roads difficult, even here in the US. Also, a lot of “two car” garages, even built 20-30 years ago, won’t fit two cars today. We just don’t need them to all be so big. I get the 7 is geared for people being driven around. A Suburban or X7 serves a purpose with its size. But a 5 series or E class or Camry doesn’t need to be the size of the old 7 or S classes.

The trunk of the G60 seemed smaller but I did t analyze them side by side. No clue what the numbers are.

One thing we can be sure of is that the more ‘intelligent’ cars become the less ‘intelligent’ the organic behind the wheel is going to become.

In the us, a maxed out g60 is a little cheaper than a maxed out g30 (even vs 2018), but with fewer features and a cheaper interior.

I agree on all of this. Yes, the new G60 has newer tech but I don’t find it as attractive as my 2023 G30 540i. I too had seen what the new changes were in store for the G60 and in December 2022 I placed an order for my ideal everyday 540i. Skyscraper Gray with Cognac Sensatec interior. I opted for Sensatec as it will look better in 5 years vs what the leather would look like. I choose the Sport model as it comes with the standard passive suspension and it has a perfect blend of firm with a plush feeling when riding over road irregularities. It came with the 19” wheels and tires but I ordered a set of brand new OEM style 632 through a BMW parts department as well as a BMW approved Michelin Primacy Touring none runflat tires in order to obtain 45 profile tires vs the stardard 40 profile runflat tires, which in my opinion gives the ride a more refined quality bringing it closer to an older school 5-series E39 in terms of isolation and not having to cringe when driving on less than perfect road surfaces.
Also, 2023 was the last year for a true rear wheel drive inline-6, 5-series as the G60 has gained about 200-300 lbs and will come with xDrive if you want the B58 inline-6 motor. The G30 will be seen as one of the last great 5-series from BMW that has kept its roots as close as possible to the traditional 5-series shape it was well known for. Below are a few pics of my baby.

I hear you. I like the G20 a lot too. Is there an Alpina G20 in Europe? A G20 with a B58, Nappa/merino leather, more comfortable seat, and a leather dash would be a tempting car for sure.

I'm not throwing shade at the Bavarians here it's the same story across the whole personal transport industry. However, There's no real 'upgrade path' for ICE sub M brand cars anymore to be honest. It's drop the big dollars on full fat M, or you have to go over to an electric fridge on wheels that will be worthless in 5-6 years due to technology advances. I feel like this works well for the manufacturers.

The various points raised in this thread are one of the major reasons I jumped from 8 years of owning an F30 328i into a loaded G30 M550i, with a very serious goal of keeping it for as long as it doesn't begin to bankrupt me (all set with a 7Y/120K EW already)...I might even swallow big repair costs post-EW as long as they are few and far in between. It has everything I want in terms of comfort/interior/bells and whistles, a beautiful design, and more power than I will ever really need/want. I usually hold onto my cars for ~8-9 years, and I don't see myself getting bored/tired of this one for way longer than that average!

My M550 has DHP and even with runflats, it’s one of the most comfortable vehicles I’ve ever had. Only one that I’d like to do a side by side with is my old 2003 GMC Yukon. That sucker was like a sofa on wheels. The M550 is hands down a better ride than our X7 40i on 21” wheels.

It’s really comfortable, just not as comfortable as my X5. Drove it up to NH from MA today and back. It’s plenty comfortable, but it is a bitch on the hips and back to get in and out of.
