Spied: G30 5 Series Prototype vs F10 5 Series
BIMMERPOST NEWS Spied: G30 5 Series Prototype vs F10 5 Series The G30 5 Series prototype has been spotted out testing and being evaluated against the current F10 5 Series. While the exterior size look similar, the platform underneath will be totally new -- based on the modular CLAR platform (Cluster Architecture) which will also underpin the next 3, 5, and 6 Series, as well as the next the X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7. The G30 will accomplish weight reduction using pressed steel, aluminum, magnesium and a carbon fiber load bearing section of the chassis which may result in weight reductions of more than 200 pounds. On the exterior, the G30 appears similar to the F10 in size and proportions, but unlike the F10 (and like the upcoming G11/G12 7 series), the G30 sports a revised hood cutline which no longer awkwardly cuts across the hood. Under the dummy camouflage lights are L-shaped tail lights and L-shaped headlights. Gas / Diesel / Hybrid Models According to our future models index, the US will receive 530i, 540i, 550i and 540d models. xDrive will be available on all models, with the 540d and 550i models possibly xDrive only in the U.S., subject to change. Expect the G30 to be powered by the same next generation engines to appear in the 3 Series (LCI) and G11 7 Series -- everything from a 3-cylinder to the B48 4-cylinder, B58 6-cylinder, and N63 8-cylinder. As part of BMW's strategy to offer a hybrid version of each of its core models, there will also be a G30 plug-in hybrid model, which has already been spied. Technology Some of the fancy tech in the next 7 Series will also flow down to the G30, including touchscreen iDrive, laser headlight option, and a rumored separate passenger monitor. Other 7 Series options which may or may not appear in the 5 Series are: automatic parking with remote control, new "active comfort drive" assist, gesture control, wireless charging for phones The G30's reveal comes in 2016. |

Hopefully the design elements on the upcoming 5er don't look at Lexus-ish as the ones on the new 7er.

I'd be happy with a very light refresh looks wise and interior wise, focus mostly on weight reduction and making it drive more like an E60 than an F01 7 series.

i agree. i think the f10 is damn near perfect. i think we'll see the headlights meet the grill and a revised tail to mimic the new 7er. the interior will hopefully just be refreshed.

Agreed! I wasn't a huge fan of the E60, but the F10 just looks amazing. Real presence on the road too. I plan on looking at picking up an F10 when it comes time to buy another car or replace mine.

With the W213 E-Class expected to follow the design language of the S-Class and C-Class, I'm hoping BMW does something more than what they did with the GXX 7-Series. Right now, all current Mercedes' look a hell of a lot more premium than their BMW counterpart both interior and exterior.

It's nice that a diesel will be offered, but high diesel fuel prices don't help the economics any.

The new platform is supposed to reduce weight (and costs if you're a bean counter) by allowing BMW to modulate it according to the car they're building. |

IMHO outside of the G-class and AMG GT, everything that Merc currently makes is pretty dull and ugly to me. I think the SLS is one of the best cars of this decade and the old C63 Coupe looked pretty sharp too. Looks like they're back to making cars for old people again. I'm thinking of trading in my 6er for an F10 M5 but I hope BMW keeps the F10 M for at least 2 years before replacing it so that my car won't get outdated so fast. The G10 looks pretty similar to the F10 though at least from the side. Hope the weight reduction will be sufficient to enable it to be one of the fastest sedans on the planet again. |

So in my Opinion the Gxx models will be a step forward but will definitely have some downsides, perfect example. We hated the F10's steering because it no longer is as sporty and heavy as the E60. But look at how successful it is. Same with the X3, X5/6, 7er, 3/4er, 6er etc etc. Why worry, just let BMW designers and developers do their magic and steal our attention (and money ) Edit: By "Kids" I mean 20+ Yr Olds

Maybe to you. And you may just be in the minority. To me and many others, the e39 was the last aesthetically good looking 5er. The current F10 looks "blah", it just has this generic look to it. The e39, e34, e28, e12 all have an iconic look to them that set them apart on the road. Starting with the e60, it seems (to me and others) it has gone down hill.
Hopefully, the G30 can fix that. Because as it stands, the E Class, GS, A6, CTS have stepped it up. |
