F90 M5 Competition Package On Its Way. M5 CS Model to Come After?

BIMMERPOST

The 600-horsepower, all-wheel drive 2o18 BMW M5 made its debut just a few months ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but BMW's already working on a new, faster version. Or at least, that's the impression we got after speaking with folks from BMW at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.

We were chatting about the new lightweight, track-focused M3 CS with Frank Van Meel, head of BMW M, when we asked if BMW would ever do a CS version of the M5. "We don't have an M5 Competition today, so that might be an interesting question first before you look at the CS," he replied.

As a reminder, BMW's upgrades to M performance cars come in three increasingly extreme flavors: Competition Package, CS, and CSL.

Van Meel said customers are already asking for a Competition Package for the M5, an option he said could arrive "in the not so far future, theoretically." Sebastian Maier, the product manager for the M3 CS, echoed Van Meel's comment, telling us that an M5 Competition Package is "closer than you'd think."

Van Meel told us such a car would likely mimic the current M3/M4 Competition Pack, which brought a small horsepower bump and a host of chassis hardware and tuning changes.

He explained the philosophy of the Competition Package, and how it differs from a "regular" M-car. "The idea is to be better than the predecessor and the competition with the M car," he said. Then, when a Competition Package is introduced, "We want to put the level one step higher."

Van Meel also told us there's strong demand worldwide for Competition Package models—in some markets, 80 percent of M3s and M4s sold are so equipped.

Looking back at our conversation, it seems like Van Meel is hinting that, after an M5 Competition Package, the automaker might be able to make a case for an M5 CS. What about a super-hard-core M5 CSL? That's probably less likely, Van Meel tells us—you can't fit a roll cage in a 5-series and still use it as a sedan.

We will be reviewing the "regular" M5 soon. You can also expect BMW to publish a Nurburgring laptime for the performance sedan in the near future: Van Meel said that, while conditions at the famed German track weren't good when they made a lap attempt earlier this year, he's incredibly confident that the car will put up impressive numbers.

600 HP seems like such a small upgrade from the f10, feels like BMW does this on purpose to make room for the competition package....

Reviews aren't too bad. Should be interesting when they're able to get them head to head with the E63 AMG S.

This is why BMW in my view has lost their way, screwing customers. This is what Mclaren does to keep revenue flowing, and it just depreciates the last model. All manufactures add better products, but hell you don’t do it before the first is released. This is why I would never buy a first run BMW. I’ve owned a BMW since 1999, and 2018 will be the first year of not having a BMW in my garage in almost 20 years ...damn shame. No way I will drop the coin and you bring out the better car a year later and you could have done it with the current. We all should sit the first year out, and see what they do with all the old cars(:

As long as we're wishing/dreaming about a M5 CS....

- European CF racing seats
- RWD only for weight
- 285/325 Pilot Sport Cup 2s w/ Lightweight forged wheels that AREN'T GLOSS BLACK
- Ceramics standard
- Titanium Lugs
- CF hood
- CF bootlid with removed automatic motor
- No soft close doors
- Delete some sound deadening
- Titanium exhaust standard
-660hp/600tq

I think you could get this car to 4,000lbs wet and it would be a monster

Lol! Dude, lets see how much a Comp Pack equipped F90 M5 costs first. Haha! A 30hp bump would be great though. 1/4 mile in 11 flat and 0-60 in 3.0sec will probably be what the Competition Package will achieve. I have no intention of getting an F90 within the next 4 years though. The depreciation is still going to be too insane for me. We're still talking $60k-$80k dollars lost within 3-4 years on the F90. My plan is to finish my F10 M5 project and then I'll be picking up an E60 M5 6spd Manual within the next couple of years. Then we'll see what used F90 M5 Comp Pack prices are looking like 2-3 years after they come out. Besides, it's not all about speed, I just really want a V10 again. That Bowers and Wilkins sure is great though, but still doesn't even compare to the sound of a straightpiped V10.

I don’t buy Apple, and yes I do enjoy the cars I have. My point is BMW just started this place a M on everything and push out the new model. This is actually how you kill brand loyalty, and become a commodity. This is BMW’s strategy, and it’s working for them .....it just kills the great M brand they had nothing more.

Audi, and MB, have done the exact same. Going to them would be no different. It's all about marketing.

Yup, never selling it. Too much sentimental value at this point. She's been on 2 continents and 4 major racetracks. Driven across the United States twice now too. She's going on 77,000 miles now, but to be fair I haven't driven her for the past 15 months. Been working on something big. Will be unveiled very soon.

I have always said though, that if you never sell your car, you never have to worry about depreciation and losing money on it. Lol! Luckily my F10 has been good to me, and I've taken extremely good care of her. I miss that V10 though, I must have another V10 before I leave this earth!

Not so AMG 63 does not come out with a new package in a year ...LCI. Porsche GT cars do not come out with a upgraded model in a year. Mclaren comes out with a new car damn near every year which is why they kill there customer value in cars. I’ve been a BMW guy for 19 years I see the difference in the cars, and the dealerships not the same company. It’s evolving .......good to be a consumer with all the choices. I agree it’s marketing for sure ......I’m in that business so I know exactly what they’re doing also pulling cost out of their car interiors, and engine design. The big cost in cars is R and D, and BMW is recycling car lines for simplicity while charging more bro. When consumers vote with their pocket book they get better .....they last M5 had waitlist a miles long with premiums. Dealers are calling asking for people to order. Never happened with previous M’s.
