BMW 540d Will Return to US Next Month

BMW 540d Will Return to US Next Month

COMMENTS

Making its debut to the U.S. market next month is the diesel BMW 540d xDrive. Federal officials certified the model for sale in the U.S. this month.

The 2018 BMW 540d xDrive has been rated by the EPA at 26 city / 36 highway / 30 combined MPG.

It will cost $62,995 (including destination) when it arrives in dealerships next month.

Power specs have not yet been revealed but it will be based on the 530d that's sold internationally where its 3.0L inline 6 diesel engine makes 265 hp / 457 lb-ft torque. The 540d xDrive will be equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

They're not dialing it down, it's exactly the same engine as the 530d here but North America has an aversion to small numbers apparently so they have to add 10 to the badge

Always the way isn't it... the Alpina D5 is down-tuned for the UK because BMW won't sell the 550d here and the Alpina would clean up (although they won't admit that). At least it's for environmental reasons for the US.

Shame.

Be interested to know when it's coming to the UK

Well that's actually the same type of thing they did with the 328d in USA, being the 320d anywhere else in the world .

Actually 540d is a more correct positioning of that engine - it is WAY stronger and more fun than the petrol 530i.

Actually its because of emission standards that the hp is less. Has to do with our catalytic converter here in the US as the reason the HP figures are usually less than Europe.

You already gets the 530d, which this is.

This is not the same as the 320 hp 540d xDrive some gets here in Europe.

Yeah I mean the full fat 540d for the UK, that's what I'm interested to see the price/spec of.

Why call it a 540d when it's the 530d literally everywhere else in the world and what's the issue with the biturbo 3.0d?? Weird.

Current G20 diesel models in the UK

520d - 190hp - 2l 4 pot
530d - 260hp - 3l 6 pot
540d - 313hp - 3l 6 pot biturbo (not launched yet)

30d and 40d are essentially the same engines except the 40d has 2 turbos instead of 1.

Maybe so they can charge more for it here? :

No doubt that's a factor but as someone stated it's the single-turbo engine, which is called the 530d everywhere else.

Yes, simply a rebadged 530d.

Same up numbering like the F10 530d, which was rebadged as a 535d in the US.

To bad we don't have the G31 that would be the perfect engine for it and I would gladly trade my car for it.

Not very good mileage for a diesel, would expect closer to 40 MPG. Lots of torque, a bit pricey near M3 territory.

So what makes this a "40d"? It says it's based on the 30d. Usually, 30d, 40d and 50d is based on the turbochargers.

love my wife's f10 535d. diesel was so cheap too. But for some strange reason right now in socal, I see diesel is more expensive than 91 octane. so probably a no go on her next car when lease expires this august.

I disagree. IMO, no diesel engine can be as refined and smooth as any petrol engine unless you care more about torque than refinement and smoothness. Personally, I'd prefer 520i to 540d. My father used to have a 530d E60 back in the day (I wasn't in the US back then), and I remember driving my buddy's E90 320i back to back with the 530d.. That 2 litre petrol engine was better than 530d's engine. 530d had a very impressive low end torque, but 2 litre patrol engine felt more refined, smoother and more expensive. That's why 4 years after that, when I was buying my own BMW, I went for E93 330i even though it was ridiculously expensive both in terms of purchasing cost and ownership cost.
