I had an issue with my 06 325i and it ended up being the electric water pump.

When i did this with the old one, it was like a weak stream when it activated. You just open the coolant cap and watch it come out the little hole.

Basically my water pump wouldn't put out more than 20%. When i went over a certain RPM (2400) the car would throw an overheating light and start pouring coolant out. So i would pull over and stop the engine and top it off, restart the car and all the lights went away like nothing ever happened. I ended up replacing the pump, thermostat and coolant flush (all from amazon) found it to be the best price (550ish). Good luck
