The lower front fascia, full hood, and lower rear bumper designs have now been uncovered in the latest photos below, posted by

September 26, 2016 Update
The G30 5 Series has been spotted with what is likely the minimal amount of camouflage we'll see before its official full reveal. Most of the car is now revealed except for the side character line and parts of the front and rear end. The sedan prototype spotted here is the 530e plug in hybrid version.
September 5, 2016 Update
The reveal of the next generation G30 5 Series Sedan and G31 5 Series Touring is imminent, and camouflage stage of the latest prototype spotted reflects that as minimal camouflage remains on this G31 Touring, which like the current F11 Touring, will not be available in North America.
We expect the new generation of 5 Series will receive its public debut at next month's Paris Auto Show.
April 4, 2016 Update
The G30 5 Series M Sport model has dropped lots of front end camouflage to reveal its M Sport front bumper. The M Sport side skirts and rear bumper/diffuser remain under camouflage, but it's clear that they are sportier than those on the standard G30 models. We also get a first look at the M Sport interior with its M Sport steering wheel. We also see a new M Sport wheel design on this prototype.
January 5, 2016 Update
Have a look at the most revealing shots of the next generation BMW 5 Series (G30) so far, and what could be the first look at an M Sport model. Most of the plastic camouflage has been removed from the prototype and more can now be clearly seen. The side body lines, the kidney slats design, and headlight shapes are the highlights of these latest spy photos. As for possible M Sport cues - the side skirts are aggressively flared, the wheels are large and sporty in design, and there appears to be a rear diffuser underneath the rear bumper camouflage.
August 12, 2015 Update
G30 prototypes are beginning to drop some camouflage, now exposing parts of the headlights and tail lights. We also get a first look at the G30 interior, which borrows cues from the new G11/G12 7 Series interior.
April 23, 2015 Update
The G30 5 Series sedan has hit the Nurburgring for the first time and we've got photos. It's also dropped a bit of camouflage compared to the first spotted prototypes.
Plug-In Hybrid
One of the G30 sedan prototypes pictured below is the 530eDrive hybrid plug-in model, which reflects BMW's
plans to offer a hybrid version of each of its core models. We can expect the hybrid powerplant to be similar to the 3 Series hybrid plug-in discussed by BMW last week. That means a battery between the trunk and passenger cabin which propels an electric motor contained within the CVT transmission casing. It will cover up to 20 miles on solely electric power.
The 530e will have more power than the current 330e, by 30hp or so. But don't expect the 530e to come to market before the 2017 calendar year. When it does become available, there will be both RWD and xDrive versions.
As we're still in the early stages of testing, the camouflage remains heavy and obscures most details on the G30, but its overall shape certainly reminds us of the upcoming
G11 7 Series. And like the G11's hood, the G30 sports a revised cutline which no longer awkwardly cuts across the hood. Under the dummy camouflage lights are L-shaped tail lights and L-shaped headlights.
Super Platform
The next 7 Series will spearhead the first extensive use of Carbon Fiber in platform construction. The platform is called 35up (or CLAR) and will be shared among all model from the 3 Series and up - including the G30 5 Series.
In the G11/G12 7 Series, the new platform's carbon core has been announced as reducing weight by up to
130 kilograms (286 pounds).
Gas / Diesel Models
According to our
future models index, the US will receive 530i, 540i, 550i and 540d models. xDrive will be available on all models, with the 540d and 550i models possibly xDrive only in the U.S., subject to change. Expect the G30 to be powered by the same next generation engines to appear in the 3 Series (LCI) and G11 7 Series -- everything from a 3-cylinder to the B48 4-cylinder, B58 6-cylinder, and N63 8-cylinder.
Technology
Some of the fancy tech in the next 7 Series will also flow down to the G30, including
touchscreen iDrive, laser headlight option. Other 7 Series options which
may or may not appear in the 5 Series are:
automatic remote parking, new "active comfort drive" assist, gesture control, wireless charging for phones.
The G30's reveal comes later this year.
