Adaptive drive is an option which adds active roll bars in addition to VDC, so the car exhibits no roll in corners at all. It is in operation all the time and works in conjunction with the variable dampers. It's very good....
The Adaptive setting in the central console allows the car to move from comfort thru to sport and back again based on the roads you are driving on...so the suspension matches the road type. It is similar to the predictive active suspension introduced on Rolls Royce a few years back.
You don't need to have adaptive drive to get the adaptive setting on the central console.
On the 540 you can't have adaptive drive together with active steering, it's one or the other.

This.
There seems to be a lot of confusion on the Adaptive mode and Adaptive Drive. Adaptive Drive will be working 100% of the time, whatever mode you are in, you simply select what mode (personal combination) you want Adaptive Drive parameters to work in.
