I also had troubles with shifting. Especially problematic was finding first gear. Occasionally couldn't get into 5th. It was less noticeable in the beginning but progressed over time.

All gears went in very good when engine wasn't running.

Gearbox oil change didn't help as much as i hoped (indeed it was really dirty, probably original one that had over 400k km on it) - same symptoms persisted.

That put me thinking towards clutch because starts with first gear were always little different compared to other cars. Not smooth enough.

Now with new clutch all gears go in like cutting butter with hot knife and it's once again fun to drive.

You could test the clutch by finding a hill and try to move car towards uphill by slowly teasing the clutch. If it stutters or does some wonky weird jumps then quite possibly clutch is worn.
