BMW gives you lots of flexibility and it is on full display with the Climate Control options. The fan speed in AUTO is a ceiling adjustment. Meaning you're saying the maximum fan speed you're interested in while on AUTO not the fan speed at the moment. So the fan speed is variable in AUTO up to the maximum set.
