Janet Guthrie. She worked as an engineer for a large aerospace contractor on Long Island, to self-sponsor her SCCA racing career. She moved up to NASCAR and IndyCar, and IIRC was the first (or only?) driver to ever qualify for the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 in the same year. It is amazing to see all of the barriers that she had to break along the way...with sponsorship being only one of them.
She is a member of our local SCCA region, and I've had the pleasure of sitting down to talk with her at a few historics events over the years. I even offered to let her drive my car at one of the Vanderbilt Cup Centennial celebrations, but she declined the offer.....
