While activating Video in Motion also activate the additional codecs, and USB playing options. Also, don't forget to complete the activation procedure after the coding (pushing iDrive controller upward and holding it in main menu until setting screen shows). At least that is the procedure on iD6.

Also you may need to activate ALL USB ports to be able to play videos in Expert Mode.

If all fails you may be trying to play unsupported video files (resolution and/or codec wise)

I've been coding my cars for a while, I'm doing it right and I'm using the same hard drive I had in my last car, you make a great a point, the LCI may not support the particular hard drive.
