I was wrong.
I'd say the biggest benefit for me in HUD are turn by turn instructions in HUD and unfortunately, if you use Apple CarPlay exclusively (me), navigation with Apple CarPlay doesn't give you anything on HUD. You also can't scroll through actions songs and playlists. It's just skip to the next track. For these reasons I can't put as much value on HUD as I did on my F10 in the old days when we used to use the cars navigation system and audio interface.

Since you put as much value on Apple CarPlay as me and value HUD so much, I'm curious if I'm missing something or doing something wrong. What does it provide on your windshield that's beneficial when using Apple CarPlay? For me, I really don't need to see my speed on the windshield. That's pretty much all I get beside the brief check controls or the rare accident up ahead.
I haven't looked at my dash board since I bought the car. I look at the screen some and the windshield. For whatever reason, I love that.

On navigation, I think I prefer the look of the BMW nav. But when CarPlay is already in use, it's just easier to use the CarPlay. So that's what I end up doing.

I'm pretty sure HUD tells me who is calling on an incoming call, too.

*when I say dashboard, I mean the gauges obviously.
Understood. Unfortunately, the caller does not show in HUD when on CarPlay. I'm not even sure incoming call shows up. I have not used the cars navigation once. It's just so much easier going to my calendar and clicking on the location of a meeting, clicking it and maps launches. Or just grabbing my phone or using Siri to kick off a route. I also think it's tricky to use the cars navigation with CarPlay running.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying hud isn't something I'd ever leave out, but I've had it on BMWs before CarPlay was invented and there was so much more information you could pull up on it. Still can, but nothing CarPlay related.
