Asked about this when I dropped my car off today to have the windshield replaced and the answer I got back from the technician was how the rear wiper blade arm isn't meant to be lifted more than a couple of degrees on the G21 model. According to him, the same thing is true of later 5 series models.

I asked him why they changed the design in this stupid way and why the information in the handbook still suggests you should be able to lift the arm 90 degrees but he was as clueless as we are.

I told him someone in here (I think it was) managed to lift the arm all the way by first removing that plastic sprint of whatever it is blocking the arm but he said customers are not supposed to do that even if it's possible.

So there we have it, stupid design for unknown reasons we have to live with it seems.
