This is a very unpleasant thread. Sorry you're encountering this.
Since you mentioned having weird issues for your hybrid system over the last year. I would press to see if BMW will cover it again. Especially with your home dealership if you brought this to their attention.
It seems crazy to me that the AC system failing (which cools both the battery and the cabin) would lead to a $20K failure.

That longer warranty on the hybrid system is for all people in a CARB state. That includes California and a few others, including NY state, as enumerated in the manual.
