BMW 520d G31 - Digital Dash Blank
Hi all
I have a 2018 (67 plate) 520d touring with just under 30k on the clock which has recently started to have a problem with the main digital dash.
Problem
Occaisionally the main screen upon car entry does not boot up and remains blank (iDrive screen, radio satnav etc is fine).
In addition the iDrive screen then reports 3 messages:
1. Driver assistance restricted
2. Pedestrian Alert
3. Front-end collision warning
Then a generic message stating you can still drive the vehicle, but if problems persists speak to the service team (or something along those lines)
Have searched the forums and this seems to be a common problem and can be (sometimes) fixed by one of the following:
1. With the ignition on but not started, press and hold the Volume knob until the console screen turns black and reboots (about 20-30 secs). This is a basic reset.
2. With the ignition on but not started, press and hold the Vol knob until the console screen turns black and reboots a total of 3 times. This is a harder reset. (Does not work on my 520d)
3. Get into the car and press the Start button 3 times (don't press the brake) then press and hold the Volume knob for 3 reboots. (Does not work on my 520d)
4. With the engine off but ignition on, for a hard-reset press and hold the Vol knob for 70 seconds, then release and press once more to start the iDrive. (This works on my 520d sometimes)
5. Alternatively, disconnect the negative terminal (in the boot) from the battery for 30 minutes and switch on the main lights for a few minutes before turning off (to drain any residual current left in the system. Then reconnect the battery (there will be a few light sparks, but this is normal) and set the time/date from the iDrive vehicle settings. (This works on my 520d)
However the problem reappears strangely when the weather is hot!
Have the car booked into BMW 1st week of June for a diagnostics, but I'm not holding my breath as a local Autotech plugged their scanner in and no error logs were reported. Interestingly, the service techie, said he had never heard of this before??? Yeah Right.
It seems to me like a software glitch, but there have been posts that this can be fixed by replacing the battery?
Maybe I will try and charge up the battery overnight and see what happens.
Has anyone else found a solution to this?
Here's hoping
Cheers
Z
