I think Car & Driver said there are now 21 different variations of the 911. This is the future of auto making. Small boutique companies (think Mazda) will not survive.
Although I am the first person who agrees with the OP. It is a shame and i feel the passion that used to go into new models has been replaced with the attitude that a car company must be all things to all people. I remember the outrage when Porsche introduced an SUV. The mere thought of the idea was treasonous. Now, it's no big deal. The only car company I'm really interested in right now is Tesla. They have some very innovative technology and my god do they make a beautiful car.
