Canon 40D or Nikon D300 ?

Hey guys. I have been shooting for over a year on my Canon Rebel (XT) for over a year now and as I have grown I have run in to some hic ups with the limits of the camera. I was thinking of upgrading to a new body. At first I was comparing the 40D to the 5D. I know the 5D is a better camera, however its only 3fps vs the 40D's 6fps and since i shoot automotive racing for fun I think the added speed of the 40D would be better. Also I dont do a lot of prints so the extra Mega pixels and the extra resolution wouldn't really benefit me.

So after scratching off the 5D of the list I was browsing some camera mags and came across the Nikon D300. I have always considered my self a hardcore Canon guy but the specs on this camera seem to beat out the 40D .. they both have live view on the 3" LCD (the 40D has a 3.5" LCD), both now have the auto cleaning sensors, and some others ... but the Nikon is full frame, 52 point auto focus system, 12.3 mega pixels vs canons 10.1, 6fps vs canons 6.5fps, ect.

I know the one downfall is that I will not be able to use any of my current lenses. I only have 3 of which only 1 is really nice. The other two are the kit lenses that came with my rebel. Anyone one have any thoughts? Any downsides to switching brands besides the lenses?
